This does make me think that he would take a small discount to stay in Calgary, based on a feeling of loyalty to the team that believed him and gave him the opportunity and the circumstances in which to succeed. On any other team, without his current linemates, it is unlikely that he would have achieved the success he has.
Now add on the additional year that the Flames can offer, and I believe that Gaudreau may well sign in Calgary for nearly $1M/yr less than his market value.
Maybe Treliving even goes to Gaudreau and Tkachuk's agents and says, "Johnny and Matthew clearly are amazing together, and it's best for the team and for both of them that they continue to play together. So what are we all prepared to do to make that happen year after year for another eight years?"
