For me Lucic and Monahan have totally different roles.
Look how other teams D acts when Lucic on Ice. When Lucic is coming the other team's D is usually very quick trying to make play or just let Lucic to get the puck with a little battle. Lucic helps to clear the puck, dump puck to other zone and go for forecheck.

But Monahan's role is to carry the line and help the D's in own zone, which he is not doing it good enough.

I am really interested to see what they do with the lines over the next little while. I wonder if they do try Monahan in the top 6 for a few games just to see if they can inject a tiny bit of confidence. Maybe something like........

Gaudreau Lindholm Toffoli
Monahan Backlund Tkachuck
Coleman Jarnkrok Lewis/Carpenter
Lucic Dube Mangiapane

I think Dube has had success with Lucic and Mangiapane previously, not to sure if the stats back that up or not.

Didn't Monny have 4 goals in that 4-game sweep vs the Avs? Like I seem to remember he scored a PPG in every game of that series or something like that...

I am not expecting him to but it would be such a great story if somehow Monahan killed it in the playoffs

Huska has future head coach written all over him. Great communicator and looks completely bought in to what Darryl is preaching.

Monahan is a defensive liability, so if you play him higher in the lineup he better produce offensively at even strength. But he doesn’t. The guy couldn’t even score with one of the best setup men in the NHL feeding him pucks last season. And playing him with Mangiapane and Coleman (who will have to cover for his defensive assignments) will bring the magic back?

That’s the thing about being a one-dimensional sniper in the NHL. Once the goals dry up, you no longer offer any value to a roster. Especially if your skating isn’t good enough to reinvent yourself as a checker.

He isn't really. At least not this season.

I hope he absorbs absolutely everything he can. All the ins and outs of how Darryl thinks and works so that we can promote him in 2 seasons to the head position.

I want this kind of Flames hockey to be the goal for years go come.

This is the only way we'll succeed, and IMO this brand of hockey is the most successful and fool proof model to win in the current NHL

League is softer than its ever been, so going tougher (along with skill) seems to be more effective than its ever been too.

Maybe start swapping guys on back-to-backs
Yeah, Lucic was great Oct-Dec. He hit a huge wall starting in January.

If you watched the game at all, you know he was clearly the worst one on the PP1

Are you intimidated by Gudbranson or something? Or aroused lol.

Off the ice he's just another dude & teammate.

You guys sound so awkward and weird with these comments.

I think more than anything that Looch needs to sit for a few games - he looks gassed and we need him operating like he did earlier in the season.

Monny is a different scratch: he needs (maybe) time to heal and rest and get his head back in the game.

Lewis seems fine to me - has been great on the forecheck, backcheck and general nuisance factor - I don't think he's here to score. If he does...great...but that's not his prime purpose.

All those guys "down" at the bottom end of the depth chart have good qualities, but they depend on time and patience and different game strategies.

He kind of is actually. He’s been on the ice for the most 5 on 5 goals against among all forwards. In other words, there are no Flames forwards who’ve been on the ice for more 5 on 5 goals allowed than Monahan. At the moment, he’s only behind some defensemen but that’s because there’s only 6 that dress per game and they play more minutes then forwards.

In my opinion, the biggest reason why is due in part to how much he and his line give up when they’re trying to score. Going back to Geoff Ward’s classic quote: “it’s not always what you make, it’s what you leave” and his line leaves a lot for the opposition.

This is then exacerbated by how little his line scores. If you’re always taking in water, eventually, you’re gonna drown at some point. You gotta propel the team forward and having a GF% of 38% is in the liability category.

Like I said though, I don’t think his poor play is due to laziness or poor work ethic. He’s working his ass off out there. Even his work down low and his one on one defending has been just fine. He’s just not made for Darryl’s system. The pace and emphasis on checking might just be too much.
