Again, size is one potential advantage, but it's treated as a prerequisite relative to every other aspect of puck-stopping. At a position where positioning, awareness, quickness, and mental toughness are paramount.
And size can be a disadvantage if it affects agility.

Size doesn’t affect agility. See NBA. I think it’s a myth that small players are quicker, faster, or more elusive. It’s just that the ones who make it have to have at least that going for them.

I think we got sidetracked. I don’t consider Wolf an especially small goalie. He’s going to wind up at 6.0 or maybe 6’1”

Do we really believe this though?
There are some players (maybe all) that have boosted height stats, and I see Wolf as one of them.
I'm all for the guy making it, not negative at all, but when I see Wolf on the ice I see a little guy. I didn't see that with Kiprusoff.

As a Flames/Calgary fan, I’m predisposed to root for the little guy.
Fleury. Flutie. Johnny.
I love that Wolf is a smaller guy in a world where his peers are giants. I’ll be cheering him on with extra gusto when he’s a Flames roster regular.

The six most populous countries in the world are China, India, the U.S., Indonesia, Pakistan, and Brazil, in that order. Those six countries account for almost half the world's population, but of them all, the U.S. is the only one that produces a significant number of hockey players. It is silly to look at world averages for height. You have to look at the countries where hockey is a popular game, and there you will find a different story.
The average adult male in Canada is 5'10", according to actuarial data. And that figure includes older men who have begun losing height because of joint wear (especially in the spine). Similar figures obtain for Americans, and Scandinavians are, if I recall, slightly taller. I haven't seen figures for Russia and probably couldn't trust them if I had, but Russians do not have the reputation of being small people on average.
To get the height of the average young man in the hockey-playing parts of the world, you need to tack an inch or two onto your number.

And the game, and goaltending, haven't changed at all since then, right?

What's changed? The size of the nets? No. The equipment? Yes and it's reverting back to far more mobile and reactive goaltending instead of mountain man blocking goaltending. All the equipment is getting smaller. While nice to have size, athleticism like Kipper had will win the day again.
Shots haven't changed, rink sizes haven't changed.
Hockey isn't a wheel that's been reinvented.
Doesn't matter how tall wolf is, his skillset will either overcome the height issue or it won't. Right now it's proving it will.

The Seattle broadcast had a nice in game segment on Wolf mentioning his time with Everett. Also showed his parents in the crowd saying he must have connections to get those good seats.

I don’t think goaltending is reverting back like you suggest. I think the big goalies are better now, as far as their technique is concerned.

Flames recall Wolf on emergency basis. Vladar non-roster. Ritchie in COVID protocol.

Just a reminder the first pic was at the Saddledome. 30+ years ago. Which will not be replaced.
EDIT: Maybe not — home jerseys were white back then. But you take my meaning.

Totally off topic but I was always sad Vernon never wore 30 when he came back to play his last season as a Flame

Why are we obsessed over 2 inches that may separate Wolf from the majority of nhl goalies.
I don't think that gap is going to be the difference between him being an NHLer and a bust.

the reality is that those two inches dramatically lower the probability he becomes a quality starter in the NHL. He's proved everyone wrong every step of the way, so I wouldn't bet against him, but if you go by the data, there is a sweet spot for height for NHL goalies and he falls outside of that.

This long after he was drafted, draft position is no longer relevant. He's won CHL goalie of the year, WHL goalie of the year twice, and is dominating the AHL as a 20 year old. A backup / 1b goalie on a mediocre team would be an underwhelming outcome after the last two years.

Super-tall goalies, despite being in vogue, aren’t any more dominant than guys in the 6ft - 6ft 3 range.
The tallest guy to win the Vezina since 2000 is Rinne at 6 ft 5.
Hellebyuck is 6 ft 4.
Fleury 6 ft 2.
Rask, Bob and Price are 6 ft 3.
Holtby 6 ft 1.
Markstrom would be the tallest goalie to ever win the Vezina at 6 ft 6.
Does Wolf stop the puck? That’s all that matters.
