I don’t know. Gallant is a little overrated in my opinion. Seattle also has a very strong goaltending tandem but no not Fleury good.

I actually like the Kraken on paper more than I did the Golden Knights before their first season.

Who is going to score 43 goals for the Kraken?

They had 4 players with 25+ goals...it seems very unlikely Seattle is even close

I would also agree that Gallant is over-rated, which is a big part of why he has such difficulty holding down a job. But by the same token, the fact that he is establishing a pattern for getting such spectacular early results from a roster also played tremendously into VGK's success that first season. Whether you like Gallant or not as a coach, there is no denying that Seattle is missing that from their inaugural entry.

Also, I think their goaltending is "fine," but not what I would call "strong." I think Grubauer is pretty average.

I wonder if we bring him back at the end of the year on a smaller contract?

Also, Sutter is really liking Gawdin so far. Awesome, hope this means he cracks the lineup.

Taking a close look at the respective defenses, I am not seeing cause for concern.

Assuming posters were referring to tonight's lineups, and trying to pair guys as fairly and sensibly as I can, it looks like this IMO:

Giordano < Tanev
Larsson < Andersson (each has some issues with their game right now, but RA is 4 years younger)
H Fleury > Valimaki (but Vlaimaki was better than HF last year)
Soucy < Zadorov (Soucy is 27 and has only been in the league for 2 years - we'll see)
C Fleury < Kylington
Borgen < Stone

and if you want to look at the full rosters...

Giordano < Tanev
Dunn = Hanifin (Dunn 267 games, 102 pts / Hanifin (last 4 years to match) 276 games, 102 pts)
Larsson < Andersson
Oleksiak = Zadorov
H Fleury > Valimaki
Soucy > Stone
C Fleury < Kylington
Borgen = Mackey
Lauzon = Gudbranson

Flames' D is deeper, and IMO, better.

Flames' forwards are substantially better.

Goaltending is also better.

I don't think Seattle makes the playoffs, and I am amazed that anyone would compare them favorably against Vegas in their first year.

^ I think that is a very homerific view of the Flames’ D

Gio > Tanev IMO
Dunn = Hanifin, I’m ok with
Larsson >> Andersson, contract notwithstanding
Even Oleksiak > Zadorov

I think Giordano was better than Tanev, and he still would be the second best defenseman in Calgary so his loss is huge.

But all you have to do last year is look at Tanev with anyone and Giordano with anyone and then Tanev with Giordano to see the driver of the duo.

What about Oleksiak's game ranks him above Zadorov? Oleksiak has 72 pts in 369 games, compared to 83 in 411 for Zadorov, and he (JO) is a year older.

Larsson is not better than Andersson. They both had bad seasons last year, but Andersson is 4 years younger and has offensive upside

Tanev / Giordano is a very interresting oine, but there is a reason the Flames protected Tanev over Giordano.

Good question. I view it that there are two Gios.

1. The one who is paired with a partner he can trust, and can play to his potential (He was in the Norris conversation with Brodie as partner)
2. The one paired with an up and coming defender, where Gio tries to play a simpler game, a bit more focus on covering for the lesser partner, and is less effective

Gio with a partner like Tanev or Brodie that he can trust is a beast

Tanev is rock solid and makes his partner better

They kind of play different roles, but slotted optimally, Gio can get to a level Tanev can’t. That’s my view

Who was William Karlsson before the Golden Knights first season? Vegas roster was not impressive prior to puck drop in 2017. I think Seattle has a nicer looking roster prior to their first season than I thought Vegas did. I highly doubt they have the same luck but their roster looks decent enough to compete for a playoff spot

Surely age and contract status factored in
