You know, that's a fair point. It's good to have guys that have been there.
It's better than splurging on Leafs.

It's no different than any other job. These prospects are "interviewing" for a position, be it in practice or in limited game time.
If their performance is poor during these "interviews" do you think they're going to get the job?
The prospects that do stick are the ones who either outwork or out score the vets.

Sutter has a clear idea of how he wants his teams to play and he had a chance to evaluate the team during the last 30 games. He must be pretty happy with the changes because he had the team giving up the third fewest chances in the league during his time as coach and they have added 4 players with strong defensive attributes. They are going to forecheck teams into the ice and hopefully they can comfortably lock down a playoff spot in the Pacific.

It is funny when I read people saying: "Is Sutter the GM now"?
Sutter as GM was fantastic early on when he was the coach too. He just seemed to have his finger constantly on the pulse of that team, and most moves he made just seemed to fit a hole really well. The more years removed from his coaching duties, the less 'on the ball' his moves were.
I think a GM and a coach should work closely together. It is the GMs job to find players for the team that fit, and it is the coach's job to make best use of them - but it works out so much better when they are giving each other input and figuring out how to best plug a hole and in what direction to take a team.
If you look at the Rangers in the 90's and early 2000's, they never won anything even though they assembled the best players available. They didn't plug the holes well. Their GM just seemed to throw the most money at the UFAs that wanted to join the team anyway, but they always ended up with a highly talented but disappointing team.
Sutter in 02-04 plugged so many holes on the Flames, gave them an identity, and the result was a Stanley Cup Final (win, dammit!).
Hartley in '15 had this team rolling even though their talent level was abysmal because they practiced hard, they played hard, and they played for one another. It wasn't a 'shocker' of a season or an unlucky season - there were predictions made after the 2014 season outside of the usual homers that had this team making the playoffs the following season. And they did.
I think some holes were plugged, the start of an identity was formed today, and Sutter is a better coach than Hartley was, but is just as good of a motivator and knows how to get a team to work together.
Lewis is a good add, and I am glad that Treliving and Sutter seem to be on the same page right now.

I love that it's very clear that Treliving is bringing in players who will suit Sutter's brand and also is making the Flames a harder team to play against as that's been one of my bigger personal annoyances.

Don't know anything about him, but if Sutter likes him as a 4th liner - that works for me.
How is his skating?
Dube - Backlund - Pitlick
Lucic - Lewis - Ritchie
It is going to be a lot more fun playing Edmonton this year!

Thank God his salary isn't high, as he'll surely get cut at some point. I'd rather have a better potential young guy fill out the roster instead of slower older guys but I guess this is Sutter's ask.

Trevor Lewis was a first round pick of the LA Kings. He's a good skater. He's got a pedigree and skills.
Sutter molded him into an elite shutdown centre.
Little to no offense, but he does his job very well.
He'll kill penalties and win faceoffs and free Lindholm up to be more rested to generate offense.
Glenn Gawdin should be a sponge and watch and learn from Lewis and develop into a similar player.
Sutter also called him a "Pro" this year, which was probably a shot at some of the younger players on the Flames who he called out for immaturity.
Coleman and Lewis are here to teach these perennial losers what it takes to be a pro and what it takes to win.

I'm surprised how many people don't know who Trevor Lewis is
He's a shutdown C who plays the Sutter style to perfection. He's a warrior and will block shots/get in front of the net every shift
He used to be fast, but at 34 I assume he's slowed down a bit. I can see him being part of a new leadership group here
Might be worth mentioning he's also an American along with Coleman. Eichel will fit right in

All the uproar from the minority about hating this deal and how good teams don't sign guys like this?
Well the Stanley Cup Champions today signed 36 year old Pierre Eduoard Bellemare for $1,000,000 AAV for 2 years to "block their young prospects" from a 4th line role.
