I bet this is a one off...they absolutely pounded the historically bad goal tending and 17 games in 30 days Flyers. I bet he is good but not at this level.
Lol Nurse with 3 2nd place votes from Edmonton media.

Well hats off to Flames scouts for unearthing a Norris Trophy winner in the 3rd round of the draft. I can't fault the organization for what happened seeing there's a loophole for college players. My fear is that this is only going to get more and more common as US born players become more prominent in the NHL.

Good for Fox, he had a great season. A little surprised Makar finished 2nd with all the games he missed.
Three 2nd place votes for Nurse. LOL, too funny.

It could just be my perception, but it seems like more top prospects are going the university route. The value of even a couple years of university is worth more than a junior hockey player stipend. If it was my kid, I would probably try to steer them that way.

The thing is there's a loophole the other way too, with black hole RFAs like McAvoy and Hughes. Basically get no RFA rights at all, though they do get through their ELCs a bit faster.
I do think the NHL should just standardize things so there's no difference between prospects based on where they play before turning pro.

Fox is fantastic but probably not yet the best defenseman in the league. Whether he was going to sign or not, I promise you Flames had no idea they were trading guys that would be 1st and 4th in Norris voting three seasons later. That’s craziness.
Regardless just waiting for Makar to come home.

Won’t make difference. Then it’ll just be like the Hart and Art Ross.

If it was my kid I would 100% steer them the university route without question! The rights stuff would just be bonus.

Being a normal dude that plays hockey.
Gets drafted into the ####ing NHL and has the potential to make millions.
....Screw over the team that used a pick on you.
#### Fox. Guy is an #######.
Also its completely ridiculous this loophole even exists without compensation.
Remove the loophole or add compensation, first one is clearly the best option.

Maybe some guys have the it factor and can show up on their stage. Having a player that doesn't want to be there could end up worse. Wasting time developing whilst his heart hurts. Feels like first card at a blackjack table. It comes, it goes.

I hope Brad Treliving goes to the scouting team and congratulates them on Fox's win. It really sucks Fox isn't a Flame, but it speaks volumes of our scouting staff to have selected him. Nobody could have predicted this would happen.
Clearly from Fox's and his agent's perspective, the gamble paid off and it was 100% the right move. They were able to utilize a loophole and force a trade from not just 1, but 2 franchises to effectively end up in the destination of his choosing. Then to not only be nominated for a Norris, but to win it as a sophomore. I believe he is eligible to sign a new contract this off-season to take effect next (correct me if I am wrong). Dude is going to get paaaaaiiiiiiiid by the NHL's #1 organization known to give our massive contracts like Halloween candy. From Fox's perspective, absolutely 100% the right move for his career.
I ain't even mad. It worked out for him.
Sure would be nice to have a Norris-calibre D on the backend right now to take over for Gio. As mentioned, as least the Flames got value back. Carolina gets hosed the most with nothing to show in the end.

They got 2 second round picks for him, and flipped one for a slightly lower 2nd and a 3rd.

More value in making the Rod Langway Award (best defensive defenseman) official instead.

That's right forgot about that. I guess they were fortunate to get something. At least the Flames got 2 roster players on good contracts.

If anything, the Bobby Orr trophy should be for the best defenceman, not just highest scoring.

Am I the only one not mad at the player? The NHL set up these rules and he is playing by them. He took a massive risk betting on himself instead of signing with the team that drafted him.
