If your not going to shut him down, at least move him away from Johnny. Johnny’s game is so reliant on a quick trigger centre from his wing that neither are effective.
I think we have already seen the best monahan has to offer, he might be better suited in a shutdown center type role to extend his career

He’s not fast enough to be a shutdown centre.

Backlund is a much better skater than Monahan. Tkachuk isn’t.

Can you honestly slot Monahan ahead of any of the North Divisions top 2 centers outside of Ottawa? I'd certainly take any of Horvat, Miller, McDavid, RNH, Schiefle, Dubois, Matthews, Tavares and Suzuki (Danault is probably a wash) over him any day of the week, regardless of contract. I don't see many other teams lining up for his services when he finally washes out of Calgary either.
It's painfully clear that he's one of the guys that is the problem as he's a woefully inadequate NHL centre on a downward spiral. This annual claim that he's playing injured is ridiculous. Everyone is hurt at some point and if he actually is somehow hurt so bad that he's playing like a complete bum, he should be on the IR. Lame excuse for a lame duck player.

I'm sure he may be dinged up but a lot of players play through it at a higher level than Monahan. He's been a good player for the organization but he's on a decline going back two seasons and the reality is that he's very likely a post-apex player. It sucks but he's not the first player to decline before his 30's.

Watching the game I think it has to be wrist again. He was skating fine (for him), he was pretty physical, he was in front of the net as usual, was mugged a few times and won a number of decent battles. His passing was OK. He won a bunch of FOs. But his shot was off. He missed one good chance and on others, the velocity doesn’t seem to be there. Unfortunately the wrister is his biggest asset.

I wouldn't say he is declining. He's a 30+30 player, has been throughout his career with one exception. He'll still be a 30+30 player in the future.
But you're probably right, he's peaked already.

How? In your video game?
I guess Milan Lucic is a 30+30 player too.

Calling Monahan a 30/30 player seems exceedingly reasonable.

WAS a 30/30 player.
Hasn't been that player for about 130 regular season games and 15 playoff/play-in games.
How many games does it take in your opinion before a slump in form becomes a drop in form?
Another 50? 100? 200? How long are you prepared to wait?
By this measure, Gio is still a Norris trophy defenceman too.
We really should have kept Jagr, guy had 1921 career points!
Troy Brower was a 20/20 guy for about 7 straight seasons, should have kept him too, he'd return to form eventually.

Seeing a lot of Sean Monahan’s wrists in here. I don’t think his wrists are even his biggest problems. He scores most of his goals within 10 feet of the net.
It’s his legs that hold him back mostly. His mobility and pace of play keep him from being effective in a lot of areas. Leon Draisaitl went through a lot of early struggles in his career because his skating was so poor. But he’s fixed that and then some. Now he has the separation speed plus the big frame to hold onto pucks and make plays whereas Monahan’s speed topped out early with very limited improvement over his career.
That’s why there hasn’t been the same exponential growth to his game like Draisaitl. It seems like the Monahan that scores 31 goals in year 2 is pretty similar to the Monahan we see today. He’s probably more assertive defensively, but even then, still not exactly a 2 way force.

Monahan isn’t a centre. I expect the next team he plays for will move him to the wing.

Every coach he’s ever had played him at C. Hartley played him at wing for a fairly small number of games, then moved him to the middle.
They might have tried LW if they needed that spot filled and could spare a C. But RW? Nah.

How would Monahan look with a couple of wingers who could get in on the forecheck with speed, create turnovers in the O-zone, and still have the skill and ability to make passes in tight spaces?
I think the closest thing we have is Dube and Mangiapane; perhaps Lucic as well but I wouldn't call him fast. Bennett has the speed but I don't think has the skill to be effective as a playmaker.

I actually thought Dube looked good on that line yesterday. In fact, that line and the 4th line were much better than the other two IMO.

People forget that Monahan's office is right in the slot, in the area where players with out the puck take a beating the whole game. Anyone who has stood in front of the net knows that its all crosschecks all the time.
