Did Tre even try to resign Brodie? Or was that not part of the process?
Don’t get me wrong I like Tanev but looks like Brodie has left a gap for sure.

I do not consider myself a hockey strategist but to my eye the Leafs play a very similar structure to the Flames, but with good execution leading to speed through the neutral zone.

Faster and better forwards helps too. The Flames are a much much slower team than the Leafs.

Tanev is a good reliable stay at home D, pairs well on the second with Hanifin
Rasmus is likeable but he is not ready to be a top pairing D, certainly not at the level of Brodie

It’s not that they have to be slow. They play slow.

Their passes are more intelligent. They pass into skating lanes for their teammates, not to stationary guys. And even if it isn’t taken cleanly, it’s bumped forward and not coming back at them.

Supposedly he tried but Brodie held off and went Leafs. The Markstrom deal was holding things up too IIRC.

When your forwards aren't speedy it's tough to play an up-tempo fast style.

Treliving traded Brodie for a very good #2C but that POS #2C invoked his NTC
The whole Hamonic/Brodie asset management fiasco was such a ball drop by Treliving. Especially since the team never won a ####ing thing that mattered with those two players around.
Not to beat a dead horse, but how many more assets does this team have right now if he doesn't deal for Hamonic and gets some sort of return for Brodie before watching him walk out the door as a UFA?

I think it was Tre that wanted to get Markstrom first and by the time he got to Brodie, TJ had decided on Toronto

Please.
You have seen 13-23-28 play fast, don’t pretend you haven’t
This team used to move the puck fast

One thing I have to say, is that looking at the standings makes me hope that the attitude around the Flames is the opposite of here, because there is all sorts of opportunity to make the playoffs and go on a run.
As bad as the Flames have looked, and it's been real bad lately, they are still in the mix.
ETA: If the Flames are out, then I will be fine pulling for this Leafs team to go all the way. They play a good brand of hockey.

Well they looked fast but were they really? Whenever they play fast against a true fast team they don’t look fast at all

That’s what makes it so brutal to watch this year
Montreal is not that good, there is a team that has a hot start every year.
Edmonton is Edmonton
It’s right there for the taking if they just get their #### together

They won 50 games and were second in the league
Just because they were beaten soundly by one team shouldn’t mean they can’t be close to what they were before

Sure. I miss the days when the Flames best players played like it. For years now it's been few and far between but we have seen it. It was fun.
I said it's tough to play a fast style when your forwards aren't very fast overall. Look at the forwards......not a lot of speedsters in there.
