He's going to get something. Being in a car and knowingly running over a cop without calling for help, and turning in yourself and the driver is going to net a large sentence.

There is, of course, an offence of accessory after the fact, but that's not what he asked; he asked if he was just an innocent passenger if he could be charged with murder. I think speculating about that sort of thing is not particularly fruitful here. Better to wait for the investigation to be complete and charges to be laid rather than guessing at what happened.

He’ll testify against the driver to secure a conviction and plea down.

Would this not be second degree at most, I can't see how you could argue this was planned or targeted.

I can’t see how you could make such a comment without knowing any real facts.

When we layout different levels of criminal responsibility for actions based on intent, they should be written well enough to cover all circumstances (not etching out little exceptions because the judicial system cares about the people close to it more than it cares about the rest of us).
These are ‘jobs’ which put them in harms way, and provide a service to society that is integral. Damn right it’s a different standard, and it should be.

Being in a criminal enforcement role isn’t just another job.

RIP Sgt. Harnett. Thank you for the service and sacrifice.

The only other comment I’m going to make on this is...when this could’ve happened to you, it really makes you think. It also makes you appreciate still being alive.

Sorry, I’ve been having a few scotches in Andy’s honour. This is not the first former co-worker I’ve lost over the years. It never gets easier.

New Years Resolution: every police officer we happen to see in person, we should make a point of saying thank you for serving in what is turning into, or perhaps always been, a thankless job. I’d go so far as opening that resolution/rule up to all emergency services.

A bit more info/clarity;

Quote:
When Amir Abdulraman and his 17-year-old friend were pulled over by police on New Years Eve, there was already a warrant out for the older teen's arrest.

Abdulraman, 19, was wanted for assault when Sgt. Andrew Harnett initiated a traffic stop in the city's northeast. The vehicle he stopped struck and dragged him, killing him.
Quote:
On Thursday night, just before 11 p.m., Harnett had pulled over the vehicle after running the license plate and discovering it didn't match the SUV.

He spoke with both the driver and passenger before the vehicle fled, striking and dragging Harnett

So this wasn't the officer stepping out in front and the driver panicking. This was the officer talking to him, he decided he was busted and killed a cop. Throw the book at him, melt the key and throw it away.

This will likely be the final update on this matter. I'd like, on a wholly personal note, to thank my "CP Family" for this thread and their general reaction to this, while my "LEO Family" deals with this. The messages I saw here have helped more than you know. Thank you, so very much.

Update #5: Calgary police officer killed in the line of duty

We would like to start off by thanking everyone for the tremendous outpouring of support we’ve received during these difficult times.
Calgary police Chief Constable Mark Neufeld says, "As a Service, we cannot fully express how immensely grateful we are for the outpouring of community support we have received following the tragic loss of Sgt. Andrew Harnett. There is no doubt we are all feeling this loss, but please know this community support is helping us all navigate this difficult time. Knowing you are thinking of Andy, his family and our policing family, when you yourselves are dealing with all of the uncertainty and challenges of the past year, is comforting to say the least. We are proud to serve you and I am proud to lead our officers and support staff. Over the past 24 hours they have done a tremendous job in not only locating and charging those believed to be responsible for this senseless act, but have also continued to serve our community attending calls for help for those that are in need."

Family Statement

As you can imagine, the Harnett family has been overwhelmed with the events of the last few days. When the family is ready, we will be sharing a statement from them, along with any additional photos they wish to share. In the meantime, we must ask everyone to please respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Blue Campaign

Many people have reached out to ask how they can help the family, and how they can show support during unusual times when we cannot gather. Several have begun a blue campaign in which blue ribbons are tied on homes and throughout communities, as well as displaying blue porch lights. It means the world to our officers to see these displays while they continue in their duties during this difficult time. Thank you to those who begun this campaign, and to those who have taken part.

Messages of Condolence

An email address has been established for those wishing to send messages of condolence to Sgt. Harnett’s family – condolences@calgarypolice.ca.

Investigative Update

The two accused have appeared before the Justice of the Peace, who has issued they remain in custody pending their next court appearance on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021, for a bail hearing.
Now that this matter is before the courts, we will have no further information to provide publicly. Investigators are working hard behind the scenes to gather all available evidence about the events that transpired on the evening of Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020. Anyone who has information about this case is encouraged to call the call Homicide Tip Line at 403-428-8877, or through Crime Stoppers anonymously through any of the following methods:

Sounds like the officers wife was pregnant with the couples first child.

It came from a tweet from Western Standard, but if true that's heart breaking.

They dragged him for 400m hitting speeds of 90km/h, the passenger told the driver to flee after other officers were questioning him. Hang them both.

Where did you hear that the passenger told him to flee? I am not doubting it, but interested in what other details there are.

It's so senseless. The charges they were facing (unregistered vehicle), and an existing assault charge, were such minor things to run from once you are already pulled over and identified. You're already caught at that point and running just adds to the punishment. The fact a guy died because of such a selfish and stupid act is just terrible beyond words.

That body cam footage is going to be terrifying and so awful for the family to see in court. They can tell that the passenger grabbed the wheel while the driver pushed him off the car into oncoming traffic.
