FWIW the NHL had Kiprusoff listed as 6'1".

Anton Khudobin is 5'11" and just backstopped the Stars to the Western Conference Finals.

How much does having Tkachuk on this list help the Flames perceived ranking? Where would he rank in terms of potential of players aged 22 and under as of 9/15/20? Top 10? Any age cutoff is a little arbitrary so I guess a lot depends on how you view the 2019 draft picks who have yet to play pro.

Yes. But this is an exception, not the rule. The fact that smaller goalies have had NHL success does not negate the fact that Wolf is an extreme long-shot to play games in the NHL.

Meh, its only the last what....6 to 8 years now where the giant blocking goalie trend really took off. Average sized goalies are fine. And with equipment getting smaller again its making giant blocking goalies obsolete. Goalies like Parsons and Wolf who have explosive athleticism will be the new norm once again.

Please, get excited for Wolf. We haven't had a goalie do the things he's done almost ever.

Stop fretting over size. He still has 3 or 4 years left to physically mature.

I am excited about Wolf, and I am not fretting. I just happen to think he has a lot to overcome in order to get to the NHL. He has been terrific so far, but there are still big hurdles ahead for him to clear.

Is Wolf not already exceptional? It could be that size translates better than stats, but no evidence to support that has been presented here.

The first step to succeeding in the NHL as a goalie is to be exceptional in lower leagues. Good. Wolf has done that. There is a lot more work to be done were numerous exceptional junior goalies have stagnated.

I can't dig it up at the moment, but in a much earlier discussion about NHL goalies this year data was presented which shows rather clearly that a substantial majority are over 6'1". I have never suggested that Wolf's ceiling is already set as a result of his size, only that it is a factor which mitigates pretty strongly against his success if expectations are that he will become a long term starting NHL goalie.

And he has been a career backup. That isn't to say that Wolf won't be a great goaltender and he could be amazing and he is doing everything in his power to be the best goaltender possible. Hopefully for the Flames that will be enough and he grows into the player we wish him to be.

This may be a dumb question - why does Everett always seem to have elite goaltending prospects.

Anton Khudobin's career stats are very impressive.
It almost seems as if he was never given a fair chance.

Same goes for Halak. Another example.

Both are short goalies. Hmm...

For me, it's not the size that i'm skeptical about with Wolf, it's the system he plays in.

Yea, he could be Carter Hart, but he could also be Leland Irving.

Then he says Ruzicka, Phillips, Wolf, Zavgorodniy and Tuulola also have NHL potential.
So, no mention of

Luke Philp
Martin Pospisil
Justin Kirkland
Carl-Johan Lerby
Alexander Yelesin
Colton Poolman
Johannes Kinnvall
Artyom Zagidulin
Tyler Parsons

Not a slight really on these guys, but for the purpose of this exercise and who else is being discussed, they are fine to remain unmentioned. Doesn't mean that they don't turn into bottom 6 forwards or 3rd pair D or a reliable backup G, etc... Just that every team has those guys too

I'm not questioning that. What I'm questioning is whether it's higher proportion in the NHL than, say, the CHL. Do small goalies have a tendency to hit a wall at the NHL level that they haven't already burst through to get to the CHL? That's what's important to assess the likes of Wolf.

Carter Hart was a 6-footer when he was drafted, but he sprouted up to 6'2". Maybe we'll get lucky, and the same will happen to Wolf-then the question of size goes out the window.

Writing off Wolf for size is just dumb. If he couldn't play the position at a high level he wouldn't be doing what he is.

What, 5'11, 6' when he's done growing probably? Loads of nhl guys past and present in that range.

The reaching for reasons to nay say just cause you felt burnt by gillies/ortio etc coming up short is silly.

Dude didn't play good hockey, he played extraordinary hockey this year.

He's basically in a class all his own of late. Let's acknowledge the real potential there.

And let’s not forget: Mike Vernon was 5’9”.

Recognizing some of his specific challenges and weighing these against the likelihood of success in the NHL is not "writing off" Wolf.

A lot has changed in the NHL since 1999.
