I lived in Texas for a year, and I will say that I've never met better people, I really loved living there, and no not because I was a gun nut. There was a real individual toughness and non nonsense no bullshyte approach that I respected and see too little of in Canada.
The Texan's that I lived with, worked with, went to school with, partied with, drank with and had late night long drunken conversations with are still some of my favorite people and I've kept in touch with them for a long period of time.
When I spent time in New York and spent time talking to people on the Island and this was after 9/11, they were friendly and funny and hospitable.
People have this caricature of American's based on opinions created around the extremes of their society.
I will say one thing, I've met a lot more honest American's then honest Canadians.

Puh-freaking leese, seriously? More honest Americans than Canadians? What a craptastic argument. Just as easy as you could put forth your argument, I can counter.
I spent almost 4 years working at a LNG plant in BC. The main contractor was US and the main engineering came from the US as well. There was a warranty issue with one of the major components so they brought in people to fix it from the southern states...They were flabbergasted that we did not have conceal and carry, they constantly made jokes about Obama being a ****** monkey and disparaged homosexuals and other minorities(this was before trump) Some of the attitudes were really shockingly bad. Also, there were other LNG experts brought in who talked about taking pot shots across the mexican border with all sorts of rifles and guns. It was bullcrap what they talked about.
Were some of them just normal and reasonable?? You betcha. But to say that more Americans are more honest than Canadians is pure Bull****

I also know a friend(lady) who's 52 years old who lives in rural Arizona who carries a *something something* snub nosed revolver in her purse when she goes out. Has she taken lessons to shoot it? yup. Does she shoot it regularly? nope. Sooo...meh?

Lots of family in Texas, some voted Trump, some did not. Trump voter absolutely does not mean they are racist or anything. All great people. I really like Texas...one thing I can say for sure is that I enjoy the service way better in Texas, you really notice when you leave.

ah.
This explains why you get so defensive about referring to trailer park dwelling Rambos, and white guys in pickup trucks hunting down black guys.

Can't imagine raising kids in places where these sketchy characters are marching around streets and parks with real or fake guns. Skinned knees should be the most realistic/probable concern for a parent when their kid is out playing.

I have spent a decade living in red America after growing up in a mostly purple but on the bluish side part of the country. While there are instances pretty much every day when I question why in the world I want to live in this part of the country, guns usually aren't one of the things that cause it. While I do giggle when I see some wannabe rambo carrying in Target, I usually go on with my day. I've never felt that I could or couldn't say something because someone might be carrying.

Meant to grab this in the multiquote and forgot, so sorry for double posting...
As someone that has lived for significant time in 3 disparate parts of the country, I honestly feel CP has the pulse of America pretty good. I saw nfotiu thanked your post and he is in Virginia and often has pretty different takes on things. And I have also conversed with EldrickOnIce and he has some pretty different experiences. So its certainly anecdotal at best, but I pride myself on having seen a pretty wide swath of what this country has to offer.

If you haven't been back to your state recently, its probably changed a lot. I lived in AZ for ten years and going back is weird and different now. For one thing, we chose our official state gun...the Colt .45. The Peacemaker. Or Indian killer depending how you look at it. But whatever. It's historic. And big and loud so fitting of an official gun.
It's no Tennessee state gun though. They've got a 50 cal sniper rifle as their official state gun. It was invented by a Tennessean so I guess that works.
Just for reference, here are the other state guns...

Arizona...I worked in a bar with bullet holes in it from the 1800's. There were pictures of the Earp brothers hanging out at the same bar. I've seen Johnny Ringo's grave at Turkey Creek. I've had guns pointed at me only because I was lost and hiking in someone's patch of crappy desert. You can build anything you want in the desert. The suspicious land owner lived in a cave and grew apple trees in his riparian zone. He said, kid, you weren't planning on stealing any apples were you? I was like no. He said good, then you sure as hell aren't planning on taking any of that marijuana then are you? I was like man, that's genius. Throw em off with the apples and hide the real deal...biblical. The guy even lived in a cave. I'm sure someone lived in a cave in the Bible...probably never came out guns drawn though.

Only for 3 days, and his Dad would flood the Earth and drown all of mankind except for a 700 year old guy, his family and millions of animals, if he got too pissed off, no guns needed.
Also, said fellow could come back from the dead, so shooting, hanging, decapitation, electric chair, etc. none of that scared him

Sorry what, the way his weapon is slung?
It is very real and very useful in a combat environment. It facilitates quick reaction while allowing you to have your hands free to utilize other weapons, say an M72.
In this setting he looks like a ####tard, as do all people that open carry.

It all just kinda became a blur after enough of them decided it would be a good idea to elect Donald Trump.

Can you write a book? Like seriously. It would be one of the more random bathroom books ever. Your conversational style is interesting, you have some of the most interesting and craziest stories ever and even your pure musing is worth listening to. You could grab some Dos Equis and parody the commercials to being the most interesting Calgarian man in the world or something.
I met you once to buy something from you and you were musing about selling a Kangaroo rug from a property you own near Okotoks a few days prior. Not to mention we were digging past some strange and random things like dinosaur bones, power tools, toys, cases of mini alcohol bottles and a variety of paintings including nude art in a storage locker.

I used to work for Trican, had some guys from the Houston office come up for training for a week. Our conversations were pretty normal until one of them asked me what kind of guns I owned. He seemed quite surprised when I said I've never owned a gun, and was shocked when he asked the rest of the team and none of them owned guns either. Guns were such a normal part of his life that he couldn't understand not owning one
Found out a few months later that he ended up committing suicide, by self inflicted gunshot of course. I'll always remember that guy as a reminder why I'll never allow a gun into my house
