I couldn't tell you the correct slash to use for a website, network share, or file system, but in front of a keyboard I will always type the right one from muscle memory alone

Forward slashes in the Linux world, and most websites are probably hosted by Linux, so '/' for websites is maybe a way to remember it.
Or I want to "go" to a website, so "forward" slashes for going to the website.
I always try to come up with mnemonics to remember arbitrary stuff like that.

I know what the correct direction is for those things, I just can't remember which one is called forward or back.

We read left to right, so forward slash leans forward /

8's are easy! You double 2's twice!
7x2 is 14 - double that is 28, double that is 56!
Or you can count up or down from a known fact - 64 is 8x8, subtract one set of 8 to get 56!
I like the 5, 6, 7, 8 mnemonic, too! I'll have to remember that one!

Except slashes don't creep they lean
Yeah you have to remember lean vs creep but mnemonics are just about finding the one that sticks in your brain.
The other way is to force yourself to use it, type in website addresses every day for years and you won't forget.

Oh, I use them all the time, I just never mentally say back or forward, I just mentally picture what way it goes. Then when I'm supporting someone over the phone i'm like, uh, the one for URL's, not he one for DOS commands.

I'm embarrassed by how long it too me to be comfortable using the terms "former" and "latter". Same with the expression "turnkey".
Still can't fold a fitted sheet.

that's easy... only have one set of sheets! sheets come off and go into the wash/dryer. then sheets go right back on the bed!

If I'm helping someone over the phone, I usually end up describing the slashes as "bottom left to top right" or "top left to bottom right" because forward/backward slash is not common lingo for the average user. I learned it when escaping characters in C - backslash t for tab, backslash n for newline.
Even though I use the "spring forward, fall back" mnemonic successfully to figure out daylight savings time, I still think to myself that "spring back, fall forward" makes sense too.

"After typing in your code, please press pound"
[*] vs [#]
Is it asterisk or sharp?
I get this right by associating the one that isn't star is the one to push... but I still hesitate, pause and sweat bullets every time thinking today's the day I screw up by second guessing myself.

There is some merit to this as the colon has several uses while the semicolon is largely useless and usually used improperly (I have been guilty of this).
