JESUS christ. I heard about the coma and as terrible as that was figured he would pull though. This is just awful devastating news. Absolutely no words.

I played a few games against Colby in 2011. While I don't remember him specifically the Broncos were always a tough draw. RIP man, love to the family, friends and teammates

They said it was a colloid cyst in the brain. Essentially it is a non-cancerous tumor that fills with fluid to the point it blocks the passages (ventricles) of the brain. It blocks off cerebrospinal fluid causing an intense amount of pressure in the brain. When this happens, usually the person experiences major headaches, memory loss and difficulty, and vision problems depending on how big, and wherein the brain the cyst is.

It is very rare that these things result in a loss of consciousness or a coma, but from my understanding what happened to Colby was that the cyst created so much pressure it caused a hemorrhage/brain bleed. He would not have lost complete consciousness at this time, but the doctors are the ones who put him in an induced coma in order to treat it properly. They removed the cyst, but by that point such a sudden and intense brain bleed would cause so much damage to the brain, nervous systems, and heart.

What is so crazy is that you usually see the headaches and vision loss ahead of time before a brain bleed will happen. It's remarkably sad how young he was to have this type of thing happen, and from my own knowledge the chances of survival, in this case, would be very slim.

Edit: And in case anyone is wondering specialists, and researchers do not know the definite cause of colloid cysts.

Rest in peace Colby.
