Ok the only way Treliving can save his job is if he gets Sutter to coach the rest of the season and we win 2 rounds.

Im honestly fine with it. The flames are a #1 RW or Franchise Center away from being cup contenders. There's no point swinging for anything less.

If the right pitch isn't there, the correct move is not to swing. If the right player isn't available, the correct move is to stand still. I have no doubt the flames will swing for the player they need when that player becomes available.

Clearly Ward, Treliving have no faith in Davidson or Yelleshin. Also have to think that Hamonic is done for the year. Likewise, Valimaki will spend the remainder of the season in the AHL when he is healthy.

I get that today's been strange, and that this whole season has been kinda rough, but I think it might be time to take a 5 minute internet forum break.

would have definitely rather sold than made these 2 acquisitions. Will gladly eat crow if they're big impact players for us, but I don't feel we're going to have enough punch up front for it to matter.

The Flames were in no-man's land today. In a playoff spot, so they can't start selling off everybody. Not a good enough team to 'go for it'. Don't need depth players as their depth players have been quite good. Hamonic hurt. Lots of things going on.

This team needs the core forwards, their best players, to be their best players. As long as Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm and Tkachuk aren't consistently the team's better forwards every night they won't go far, like this season has shown us. And you're not going to trade those guys today, the summer is when you start rebuilding your roster with major moves.

I'm not going to rag on Treliving today, the prices were high for buyers. The only thing I think I can look back and maybe be negative about him was his willingness/commitment to the core of this team after the playoffs, saying they deserved another shot at it after having a solid regular season for the most part last season. In retrospect, they should have blown things up before the season, as the team we saw in the playoffs was basically what this team is........not good enough.

This summer will be busy, I think. I would not be surprised to see both Gaudreau and Monahan gone, a new coach, and some other moves here and there. I think this team looks much different in October. Lots of nice pieces in Calgary, make the right moves in the summer and this team could be very good again quickly.

If Tre and management had decided the season was a write-off then why didn't they at least sell some assets?

Surely they don't believe we are going anywhere with this group?

I thought Tre was supposed to be doing hockey deals? As in player for player, long term solutions. Instead it's UFA depth additions. Just the exact opposite what should be done for a team on the bubble. Seems like just waste of picks again.

I expected two deals, as it's rare to see the Flames make more than two (2003 maybe?).

When they turned out to be both defensemen, I perchance thought a forward might be that rare exception.

Considering that just the other day the players were commenting on how close knit the group is. I think they aren't nearly as disappointed as you are.

I wish I had any confidence in Geoff Ward to take all the pieces he now has on the blueline and meld them into a functional blueline.

But I don't. Pointless adds even if on paper they were decent trades.

Coyotes add hall, getting their MVP goalie back this week.
Canucks add tofolli.
Vegas adds Lehner, Martinez
Oilers adds green, Athanasiou, Ennis
flames add... huh?
With the exception of the Knights none of those teams are cup contenders. They all wasted picks and prospects in hopes of winning a couple of playoff games that won't factor into anything but footnotes in the 2020 NHL playoffs. Most fans here realize this isn't the Flames season so I don't understand why so many wanted the GM to double down today and make a bad situation worse.

Is anyone really surprised though?

In Treliving's defense, it is really hard to be all-in or all-out with this team at the moment. You don't want to torpedo the season, but you also don't want to put too many eggs into this one either.

He needs to do something in the offseason, unless by some miracle, the players figure it out by then. It's a good team on paper that is currently less than the sum of its parts. And I don't blame coaching on this one either. Certain "star" players have simply been playing like dumbies this year.

Default Flames done for the day. edit: Francis says there might be a 3rd minor deal?

Man would’ve been sweet to get some real assets back for Brodie or Hamonic (if healthy). There were impact forwards available and just like last year they strike out.

Small deal with the log jam we have on D? Kylington for a middle-six F? Hamonic for a 4th or 5th?

I definitely agree that it's a shame ownership wouldn't let him sell, it's too bad he couldn't at least add a forward if adding is the direction they want to go in.

Doubt it. Looks to me like he's being told to just make the playoffs.

Lucky for us, Ryan Huska is in charge of the defense.
