I've been hoping for no rentals and no pissing picks away on useless depth trades.
This is a rental.
If linked to a bigger deal, cool.
If not, it's Fantenberg. A useless waste of an asset.
Rentals is what you largely get at the deadline. We have to wait until the draft to get hockey trades. I agree that it's a waste of a 4th for Forbort but I imagine the GM is under some pressure to make a trade to appease the media, fans, owners, etc.

Who on God’s green earth is appeased by a few weeks of Fantenberg 2.0? The 4th round pick has a better chance of contributing something to this team than Forbort does.
Meh, no issues with the trade especially if it provides some depth which allows one of Brodie or Hamonic to be moved. Can’t have enough defence come playoff time.

It's an odd way to do it unless it is related to something more happening.
The rental on Gustafsson makes more sense to me, but I still don't like rentals.
If this is Tree kind of shuffling the deck with more stuff to come - then I can begin to understand more of the "plan".
Should make for an interesting 40+ minutes here.
If these two moves are it though...I don't get it. Spending futures on rentals that are likely going to have very, very small impacts? That's another step along the path of death by a thousand cuts (bleeding small assets consistently).
Reserving judgement on both these deals for the next domino to fall as neither numbers or cap make sense.

I think he's just trying to help his team sneak into the playoffs so the owners can gain a few games of playoff revenue. At the end of the day the organization values the playoff dates more than a 3rd and 4th round pick.
Someone in the organization must really like him as Steinberg says they were trying to trade for him last year. Maybe they want to take a look at him and see if he's worth offering a contract in July?
