As for the “second” line, Gaudreau and Monahan can both play defence; the problem is that they’ve got such little confidence offensively that they’re cheating or otherwise trying to force it. Dube on the wing means they can simplify their game and let the young guy use his speed and do some of the work in the offensive zone.
Monahan can play defence some. Gaudreau can sometimes backcheck, but his D zone defence is baaaaad at the best of times. You need a guy who plays defence as second nature when Gaudreau is on the ice. That’s been Lindholm. It could still be. Gaudreau and Lindholm have chemistry - I’d keep them together. Dube or Mangiapane have the speed and digging prowess to stay with the play. And Dube is an alternate centre for waive outs.

Putting Tkachuk, Monahan and Backlund together gives Monahan the second centre he presently has with Lindholm. Backlund can skate and make plays, he just can’t finish well - that’s Monahan and Tkachuk. And right now Tkachuk loves to throw the puck out front but there’s usually no one there. That’s Monahan.

Gaudreau also plays in a ton of special teams situations...

Here are the Flames forwards' production per minute of 5v5 icetime:

I am a huge Gaudreau fan and I know this season is an outlier for him, but he simply has not been good 5v5.

Maybe making Tkachuk-Lindy-Mangiapane the top line will free up Johnny and Mony for some easier match ups.

But honestly at this point, I don’t think Johnny and Mony could dominate a junior team.

Everyone feels as though Johnny and Monny have struggled for a while, going back into last season. In the same breath, they want them to stay together as a tandem. Why?

The two games that Monahan played with Tkachuk, there was a noticeable uptick in his game.

I agree he is struggling but to call him a black hole and praise Mangi is silly

Another flames W this season where the better team lost.

Rittich, Andersson, brodie, tkatchuk, ryan were net positive players. Everyone else, wow, lot of useless on this team.

Backlund missing the point blank chance early on, par for the course, Backlund is terrible.

Gio was money on 50/50 pucks last year. This year he's getting owned.

Mangiapane, he's not a top 6 player. He got owned along the boards all night.

We have 2 garbage players playing with the flames best forward on tkatchuk.

I'd be just fine with a losing season if it means this team maximizes any return on Giordano, and that i never have to see Backlund in a 2nd line player here again.

Take the 2 points, but man that was fugly. Just like basically every W this season.

I think it is warranted mangiapane has been great and pretty responsible in his own zone lately, while gaudreau has been coasting for the last couple weeks a give away machine and very weak defensively it has been very frustrating to watch

Thought Rittich stole that game - just absolutely freaking outstanding!

Mang was good but needs finish still.

Brodes was a beast.

Chucky was...well...Chucky. Bang and crash and make things happen.

The Flames were lucky - but nonetheless, it was a big and emotional win for the team. Glad to see the boys able to celly at the end.

How did that happen? Weren't they winning 5-3 at one point? I only pay half attention to that team.

They were actually up 6-3 and the Pens came back and won 8-6.

Seeing that stuff makes me all that much more grateful for Rittich. It's really not all bad this season.

You mean when the board was divided between Brodie and Gaudreau as to who was the Flames' most important player?

I remember.

Thought they had more energy and jump than we've seen in awhile.

But the giveaways and breakdowns reminded me of the fire wagon hockey from the first 10 games of last season.

Need to clean that up.

They decided not to do a call-in show tonight. Steinberg says the decision came from station management.

Also I don't know what Conroy's coaching acumen is, but he seems like a guy who you would want to play hard for.

Smart. Who needs the masses commenting on Peters on live radio.

Yup sounds like they have been getting death threats about the Peters situation on their text line.

Doing a call in show probably gives these people another chance to spread some vile stuff on-air.
