The Neal signing was the killer, not the Lucic trade

This team has been disappointing all season and the outlook is grim. I don't want them to panic, but it's tough to picture a turnaround without some personnel change.
I really dislike the bottom 6, but hard to criticize anyone beyond the -13 top line after that one.
Poor Kylington.... apparently no one cares too much that he got taken out with a high hit. The myth of Lucic scaring off aggressors is a joke. Guy should be intimidating teams with his scowl from the pressbox. Playkiller.

I strongly disagree Gaudreau should be traded but if this keeps up he will be. And he'll go on to rip it up playing with a top center.

After a goalie makes 10+ beautiful saves and the team in front gives him nothing, it’s tough to fault any goal when the game is clearly lost. It should have been 7-0 after the second period.
I don’t care how a goalie performs when the game is lost at no fault of their own... it’s what they do while we are still in it.

I don't want another Phaneuf panic trade for plugs. If the top players need to be moved I'd much rather a new GM do it.
They aren't built well. Get someone who can do better.

Seriously. This team got significantly worse on paper over the offseason. Combine that with 5 career years last year that predictably regressed and guess what? This team is what it has always been. Not a contender. Not even close.
|
How does Lucic deleteriously affect the play of guys he doesn't play with? How does the acquisition of Lucic explain Gaudreau and Monahan both falling off a cliff? And how does losing the awful 2018-19 edition of James Neal equate to a dramatic "on-paper" regression, as you put it?
I think the Flames are far from competing with this roster, but it starts from the top-down. Neither Neal nor Lucic are even close to that top.

I know we’re bagging on Gaudreau right now. But that’s the most unjust -5 I’ve ever seen in a game. I don’t think he was at fault for any goals against. Every single one was off the rush from a turnover. The last one he barely stepped onto the ice as Karlsson went in on a breakaway.
Talbot was ok. Made some great saves but that third goal was a back breaker and you want your goalie to stop those.

Lol yourself he said more than that...he could have just waited for UFA. Highly unlikely Stone signs in Calgary

This was expected this year. The western conference wasn't very good last year and now they're better.

MAF made some amazing saves too...it wasn't Talbot's fault but he wasn't great

For Gaudreau - you could get a king's ransom (say two firsts and a high end prospect)
For Monahan - you could get a lot (say a high end centre prospect)
For Gio - you could trade at deadline for a 1st and a prospect
For Backlund - you could get a 1st and a good prospect
For Hamonic - you could get probably a 2nd at the deadline
For Brodie - you could get a decent young roster player at the deadline
Solid start to a rebuild. Go down to go up. Build around centres.
|
RE: The two bolds, for Monahan, I feel like he's the one you keep, and trade Gaudreau instead. The major flaw with this roster is the lack of talented centre depth. Monahan is better served as a 2nd line centre, rather than the first line. And as Bennett showed, there's no guarantee that the players you draft will pan out to be as good as you hope. So I would hold onto Monahan, and hope that there can be a player acquired in the draft or through trade that can become a 1st line centre to compliment Monahan.
And going back to Gaudreau. It's not like he's the main problem that's bringing the team down. It's more so that he can't be the number one guy to lift the team. So he's the player you give away since he can be the player most helpful in bringing in players that can make this team competitive.
As for Backlund, that's very, very wishful thinking you could get a 1st rounder, or good prospect for him. At his age, and production level now which is non-existent, Flames would be lucky to even get a 4rd rounder alone.

Incredibly disappointing because of spending to the cap and the hot garbage we looked like in the playoffs last season.
Any and all off season moves needed to address speed, size, grit, and not cowering when the games get difficult.
Character!!! This team is the epitome of lacking any character right now.
Painful and god awful to endure this mess of an organization.

Nah. Neal was a boat anchor here - didn't want to play, and didn't want to play in Calgary. (Now he gets to play with McLotteryBall, so he's happy.)
Lucic is FAR from being the problem on this team. FAR. REALLY FAR.
Think young guys: start with Johnny and Monny.
