Vernon's remembered for those saves in game 7 of the Canucks series, but the Habs were a great team that year and Vernon outplayed Roy in the Finals.

If you do not understand all the Vernon love you were obviously not old enough to watch him as a Flame. What he did during that era at his size was something special. He is the reason why they won their only Cup.

A stud junior goalie, trade up and swap picks with the Devils to get Kidd, and he's a headcase that never lives up to the hype. Oh yeah and the Devils take a goalie by the name of Martin Brodeur.

I was more than old enough. He made some great saves. However, he also was less than spectacular other years. And he was around the same size as a bunch of guys - Fuhr, Smith, Brodeur, Beezer, Millen, etc.
Vernon was a reason, but not the reason, they won the cup. They just simply had the best team in the NHL.

Yup I'd pick Turek #3. Slim pickings to be sure though.
Was there an article or story about the contract re-negotiation? What was the reasoning for it? There was no cap back then. Was it an internal budget or how would Turek's salary have prevented trading for Kipper? He was traded mid-season, so was it re-signed at the same time?
I've heard about Turek doing this, but would be interested to read some articles about the rational behind it.

I think it’s Rejean Lemelin, or “Let’em in” as he was sometimes called. This is based on the duration of his being number one. I think Turek gets underrated, and Giguere should have been up there, but if we’d kept him we probably wouldn’t have been motivated to get Kipper.

Mike Vernon had more fire than Miikka Kiprusoff, just like Theo Fleury had more fire than Jarome Iginla.

Elliott's playoff performance was a disgrace. I have never been so pissed at a Flames player.

If you're old enough then surely you remember how the Flames were completely owned by the Oilers pre-Vernon and almost instantly went to owning the Oilers.
Flames were 15-40-6 against the Oilers from the time they joined the league until 1985-86, including 0-6-0 in their first six meetings of 85-86. Then Vernon joined the team and they tied 4-4 and then won 9-3 to close out the year. Then actually beat the Oilers in the 86 playoffs (Vernon played hurt in that series, too).
From that time forward until Vernon left the Flames, they were 41-25-7 against Edmonton. Complete reversal of fortunes.
Lemelin was 4-17-2 against the Oilers in his Calgary days, counting playoffs (where 2 of the wins came from). He also won his first two meetings against the Oilers in 80-81 if you can believe it.

One thing's for sure and that's the fact this organization has failed miserably over the years addressing goaltending whether it be draft or trade. Two elite (Vernon was in his time) goaltenders in 40 years.

I still remember those crazy durashoft pads that Lemelin debuted around 86 where the rebounds would kick out to center ice. Just around the time where goaltenders were moving away from the old Brown Leather ones to white leather pads.
Really outside of Kiprusoff, Vernon, and Lemelin the Flames haven't been able to find a guy who could take an hold the net for a period of more than two seasons.
Hopefully Rittich can be the guy who does just that.

Yeah and they've spent a lot of assets in recent history for less than stellar goaltending.
Draft Picks:
2006 Round 1: Irving
2009 Round 3: Ortio
2011 Round 6: Broissoit
2012 Round 3: Gillies
2014 Round 2: McDonald
2016 Round 2: Parsons
Trade:
Hickey, Johnson, 2018 3rd for Smith
2016 2nd, and Conditional 3rd for Elliott
Bourgue, 2013 2nd, for Cammalleri, Ramo
One of those situations where we haven't spent a big asset to get a goalie, but are nearing the point where it's death by 1000 cuts since we keep spending smaller yet still valuable assets, but also haven't solved the problem.

Had the flames had a Kyrou or Formenton level prospect aside from Valimaki, the flames probably complete a deal on deadline day.
Death by 1000 cuts is right.

Karri Rammo did his job here. He could be #5 sadly. He didn’t play that much less than Kidd or Turek and definitely had way less bad games.
Noodles gets consideration for his well timed slash
