This isn't about Iggy himself but I remember back in 2009-10 season going to Calgary to watch a game against the Sharks with my parents when the Flames were battling for a final playoff spot.
We were walking to the Saddledome with my mom's cousin and crossed paths with two women. One of them saw my jersey and said "That's my boy!". I thought she meant it in a "That's my favorite player" way but it dawned on me after when I saw a picture of her that I had probably just met Iggy's mom.
Thanks to another CPer I managed to snag some tickets to the game tomorrow. I am a grown man who grew up idolizing Iginla like many of you. There may be water works tomorrow. Love how universally respected and adored he was not just by us flame fans, but the league as a whole. He will be missed.

The Flames posted a video of Iggy's mom yesterday -- really neat hearing things from her perspective:
Iggy, the greatest Flames of all time will be rightfully hanging in the rafters. Will never forget the time he scored his 50th in Vancouver, the 2002 gold medal game and the entire 2004 Stanley Cup run especially game 7 vs the Canucks. Might have been the greatest game I’ve seen him play. Next up HHOF.
Yeah, when I put this together I used a combo of the CBC and ESPN audio because ESPN definitely recognized the set faceoff play:
I remember that goal so vividly. Right in “my end” of the arena (seats on the corner over the goalie’s shoulder, second tier).
I remember not even being able to cheer because the whole play was so smart and I marvelled in its brilliance:
-the face off win forward
-Conroy’s control and pass over to Gelinas
-Gelinas’ fake shot then goal
I remember just turning to my Dad and shaking my head. It was that good of a play. It was that good of a season. Our first full season as STHs.
...And I get to go to the retirement ceremony tomorrow with my Dad. Awesome end to an era!

Listening to that Conroy interview was amazing. It’s funny to hear these stories about Jarome and the shenanigans he got into. When I was growing up I idiolozed him like a superhero and it’s almost a little strange to think he was just a normal guy.
Also the story about the cops being called to Retro’s Halloween party and watching Iggy and Reggie wrestle in sumo outfits was one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard.

This quote makes me sad lol.. I think you forgot that Stillman was a member of the Lightning when they beat us in 2004. Not saying that we would have won if we had him, but it brought back bad memories . Haha .. I think Stillman was also on the Canes when they beat the Oilers though in 2006.
Thanks for the video AC. That was awesome reliving the memories.
Very well aware of Stillman's history of success. When he was traded there were a few here who said that you don't win championships with players like Stillman. Still one of the most ironic statements made on this site IMO. Just goes to show you how fickle fate can be, and how Iggy never got his cup, but Stillman ended up with two.
When I was at U of C some buddies of mine decided at the last minute to drive down to Salt Lake City for the Olympics. Of course there was no accommodation available. They bumped into Iggy at a restaurant there and told him they had driven down from Calgary. Iggy asked where they were staying and they said they were just sleeping in the car. Jarome somehow found and bought for them the last remaining hotel room in town, a deluxe suite. Amazing.
More personally, I will never forget during training camp prior to those 2002 Olympics Iggy being by far the most generous in signing autographs for those of us who turned up at Father David Bauer, even though he was one of the last to arrive for practice. Only a handful of others also did so (including Gretz and Mario).
As a player, what more can be said. That 2004 playoff run was one of the best times of my life, and the best hockey I've ever seen live.
