i don't think anyone is saying that Tavares wasn't within his CBA negotiated rights to do what he did. Islanders fans feel that he misled them however, on his desire to stay and that his request to the Islanders not to trade him because he was planning on resigning was a rouse.
that caused the Islanders to lose Tavares for nothing...
that's why Islander fans are so angry.
I think the NYI organization deserves half the blame for taking Tavares at his word however: you never let a guy with than kind of value get to UFA status without trading him... Similar to Stone this year. Ottawa negotiated with him, but once Stone said it wasn't going to happen, Ottawa put him on the trading block.

What Tavares was saying publicly and what he told the Isles behind closed doors are surely very different. The blame for this falls solely on the Isles. Tavares knows it, and i'm sure he doesn't care one bit about what happened yesterday. Leaf fans will probably give him a standing ovation at their next home game, and he will know that he made the right choice.

The Islanders have been one of the most mismanaged organizations in the NHL since Tavares was drafted.
He owed them nothing and gave them more than they deserved. His 2nd contract was a ridiculous underpayment, and they still never took advantage of it.

I think he led them to believe that it could. I believe Lou even talked about it being well within Tavares' rights to hear offers from others teams and said that he wasn't upset by it?

I think the lesson is that if your star player is hemming and hawing for an entire year about re-signing, you just need to trade the guy no matter what he says. That person is just not fully committed to your team, and you need to move on. Every once in a while you have an exception like Stamkos, but the vast majority of the time the guy is as good as gone.

That is all true, but that does not preclude the fans from feeling jilted by the face of the franchise and for expressing their animosity with a healthy serving of schadenfreude given the kind of season the Islanders are having. This was a terrific hockey game because of all the emotion.

Really?
Why is it his responsibility to maximize assets for the franchise?
Last time I checked he didn’t have an ownership stake like Lemieux.
They made the mistake. Not Tavares.
Fans can be butt-hurt all they want, but the only one who gains from the distraction of directing anger at Tavares are the people who mismanaged the franchise during his time there.

When it comes to sports I always err on the side of entertainment. The fan participation, justified or not, made the on ice product much more entertaining. For that reason alone I am into it. Good on the fans for making some fun out of an otherwise ####e situation.

Did you watch the game last night? Islanders fans were having a blast. I suspect they gained plenty from the experience, and will continue to do so so long as the Islanders keep winning.

It didn't matter what the Islanders did, Tavares likely had his mind set years ago that he wanted to go to the Leafs and pretended like he hoped to stay in New York, all the way to the end. He should have allowed them to trade his right or state his intent. He chose not to.
He was selfish, and sure he has a right to, but he burned his bridges and danced on the other side while doing it. |
And in doing so he did the Leafs and enormous 'Solid' by allowing them to acquire him for free.

I think one thing Tavares did for the Isles is get Lamoriello and Trotz in there.
If Tavares had just said at the start of the season that he's not coming back, Snow would have just traded him and that would be that. Similarly, if he just signed an extension I don't think there would have been any changes, either.
Lamoriello coming in was directly a result of the Islanders doing everything they could do appease Tavares of his need to play for a competitive team. In the end, it worked out I'd say. They're a pretty solid team and they have a ton of cap space.

It's not his responsibility. When I say "should have" I mean I think he should have done it as a decent thing to do.
