Goalies (1): $4.5M
Buyouts (2): $1.633
Total cap (17): $72.085M
About $10M in space, and they need to sign 5 forwards and a goalie.

I think that we would have to include Sekera's 5.5 million dollar cap hit next year if he comes off of LTIR this year.

Hmm, that doesn't seem like enough to sign Puljujärvi to his 6x6.

I wonder if the Oiler's negotiate in Canadian dollar value, not realizing the league operates in USD? 25-30% over valued contracts?

Chiareli just finishing up his job as a double agent for the Flames, hell give him a scouting job with us and let him eat popcorn watching games for the next ten years for what he’s done for us.

Honestly, this contract seems like it was meant as an extension to Talbot. They probably had it written up in the off-season, Talbot didn't sign it, then he bombed. So instead of going through the hassle of negotiating a new contract they just scribbled out the crayon saying Talbot and put Koskinen.

Imagine if Treliving had just re-signed Rittich to this same contract. Even after his great season so far there would be a lot of complaining about overpayment and not seeing a large enough sample size. Now imagine if he had re-signed Rittich LAST year, that's basically what Chia just did with Koskinen. This signing is just so terrible the more I think about it

Oilers pumping the salary market on goalies again...
Matt Murray just signed for 3.75 over 3 years... albeit, Murray's contract is virtually all guaranteed...and he's had some injury history

That’s what I thought as well. $10 million is still crazy tight when needing to sign hat many players but I thought it was even worse than that because Sekera will be off of LTIR.

Somehow Murray Edwards needs to get a lucrative extension for Chia in Edmonton. There's no way he can allow him to be fired.

Interesting to look at Koskinen's game splits: https://www.nhl.com/player/mikko-kos...eason=20182019
He's been below average on the road (6-5-1, 3.23 GAA, .891), and his numbers are definitely trending in the wrong direction in December and January (after a stellar November).
The only reasonable explanation is that Chia left this offer open back in November and Koskinen's agent finally told his client to sign it, fearing Chia would get fired and his replacement would immediately take it off the table.

Chiarelli: Well, Koskinen's 6'7". That's big. That means he should have a big contract. Me like big.

This reminds me of when the Flames signed Turek for 19 million for 4 years after having a couple of hot months at the beginning of the season. This is a massive risk for the team although they were left with absolutely no other option between the pipes for next year. Seriously what were their other options other than opening the vault - no good goaltender is going to want to play behind that tire fire of a team in the city that is continually frothing at the mouth for the heads of their players.
