Flames are at 23 man roster limit. To keep Nielsen on the NHL roster, someone needs to be sent down.
Prout on a conditioning stint counts towards the roster limit.

So Prout should be back then, otherwise they have no extra D

Always nice to have guys that want to play here.
His stats for his first year in the AHL are very impressive.

I can't see them keeping Neilsen here. They need to play him to see what they have.

Klimchuk was projected to be a late 1st or high 2nd.
McKenize ranked him 30
Future consideration had him 21
Button had him 18
Ryan Kennedy had him 20
Hockeyprospect had him 23
NHL CSS had him 25th NA skater
It was Poirier who was a bit of stretch for a 1st rounder. He went much higher than his draft rankings.

... why did his PIM's jump up so much his 2nd year? Did he have a couple games where he got multiple misconducts?
Edit: Yup, found his game logs he had 4 misconducts his 2nd year vs. 0 in his rookie season.

Can they not just place Valimaki on IR?

Scorp, I have a game-worn Abbotsford Heat Klimchuk jersey. Never washed and I even think there's some snot on it.
$80, but it has to happen now for it to make sense.

Feaster tried to trade all the first round picks for MacKinnon - I wonder if that was his plan A when he acquired them.

THN and ISS had him in the 2nd round but hard to argue he was a major reach or anything. That was a draft where there was a lot of excitement around it's depth as at it was even compared to the 2003 draft by some but it really didn't end up that great outside of the top 10.

And that was a good pick. In his draft+1 year Poirier absolutely crushed the QMJHL, and then he followed it up the next year with a fantastic rookie season in the AHL. His own personal demons quashed that development, but for two years Poirier looked like an impact NHL player in waiting.

We’re lucky to have had Tkachuk fall into our lap because Poirier was supposed to have that role.

Yeah I wasn't suggesting it was a bad pick or anything. Just saying that Klimchuk was taken where he was expected to go by the supposed draft experts. Poirier wasn't.

This was actually why I was in favour of letting Iginla ride it out with the Flames. I would have rather seen him ride off into the sunset at the end of the season than get a weak return.

Iginla wanted the trade.

I like these change of scenery deals.
The Good:
Big
Physical
NHL skill level (heavy point shot on powerplay)
The Bad:
Had top 4 potential
Average skating
Mediocre defensive IQ
We should remember, Andrew Nielsen has only played two full seasons of pro hockey, and there may still be a bottom pairing D man there.

Hard to understand this trade from Toronto's perspective.
Klimchuk's best-before date is rapidly approaching, and there appears to be very little chance he'll ever suit up for the Leafs (similar to the Flames).
Nielson, meanwhile, is younger and has some NHL tools. Whether he puts it all together or not is yet to be seen, but it seems to me that Nielson is a far better bet than Klimchuk at this point in their development paths.
Add in the fact that the Leafs are starving for defensemen, and it just seems weird.

I think, from a Toronto perspective, you take this to mean we traded an AHL forward for an AHL dman.
I don't want to write the kid off but I think he will be hard pressed to make the NHL and if he did it's unlikely to be much higher than a 6-7 dman.
Toronto wouldn't be trading a guy they thought could play a significant roll for them anytime soon for Klimchuk.
Klimchuk might still become a bottom end forward and Nielsen might still become a bottom end dman.
Toronto needs better defense than lower end and might need cheap depth forwards in the future.
It's not that hard to understand when you realize this kid is a long ways away from being an NHL regular - his footspeed will need to improve significantly.
