Default Kickin it old-school...

1992. I was 28 at the time and running my first incorporated business. Motorola 8000M, "The Brick". 403 650 5498. I paid $700 for the unit and the contract was eye-watering. Monthly bills were never under $400.

And it was worth every penny I spent on it...
I was the only one that could receive calls from the drywall contractors I was working for and I got all of the work (or at least the first right of refusal) as a result of being accessible.
I have watched with great amusement as this whole thing has blown up over succeeding generations.

Last year I finally took the "plunge" and got a "smart phone", but I'm going back to an indestructible flip as soon as possible.

The "big brother" aspect of having a computer in your pocket is quite frankly?

Frightening.

All for this one, Ron

I happened to be an early adopter - Motorola Startak phone, with a 15 minute battery life. 1996, last year elementary school 13 years old, on a $15 mobile plan with Bell. It wasn't used for anything but family emergencies. It really wasn't a big deal when I look back at it surprisingly, though I was probably the only one to have a phone back then. I don't think my parents would have paid anything so I have no idea how I got such an expensive piece of equipment. But yeah, not much you could do with a faulty 15 minute talk time battery life.

I had a similar Motorola in the 90s, I think 95 or so (I was 16). Was my parents, but I'd use it when I went out. Next phone was the Motorola Star-tac which was amazing.

This was my first phone as well. I was 10 at the time. There was a family deal, so my older siblings and I all got phones.

I immediately brought it to school and lost it. Didn't get another phone until a few years after that.

I'm not sure how today's kids keep their phones without losing them. Even now, I need a landline for the sole purpose of dialing my cellphone.

I've had all of them. Nokia, StarTac, Razor... One of my favourites though was a Kyocera – an amazing marriage of a PalmPilot and phone - it was a bit fat, but amazing phone nevertheless.
