A better mindset than curves2000's poor attitude on this topic would be to come up with some better ideas for her friends. Like, if they're having conversations about recycling, not using straws, choosing suppliers of their everyday products that use less waste, it's crazy for me to think her reaction is to roll her eyes at how dumb they are. If you have some more meaningful ways for them to help the environment more, you're sitting there having a discussion with people that are clearly interested in helping out. Share your great ideas for them to help more instead of disparaging their efforts to make a difference.

Hi Sliver,
I think you may have misunderstood my post in some regards and in some ways, when I talk about this topic amongst other people, I have the same issue.
What I find is that we, in Canada and the US use an enormous amount of energy for our daily lives, lives that poor countries can only dream of but are aspiring to.
We in North America have had the ability to use an insane amount of resources in order to build up our economies over a couple hundred years, now we are lecturing other nations about environmental policies? They want to reach the same level of GDP and GDP per capita that you and I have but we are supposed to tax their coal, oil, gas???
Tesla can't produce a profit selling cars that cost $100+k USD and is having problems manufacturing 5000 Model 3's a week.
Tata Motors is selling gasoline-powered cars at a profit for $2000 and we have people in North America driving large cars and suv's, usually while towing a motorhome or some other recreational toy yet we are going to stop other countries from doing the same?
We have approx 200k planes and flight happening daily, people bringing in products and services from all over the world without a thought about any of this.
Like I had said in my original post, Starbucks is rumored to be replacing their straws with a lid that contains MORE plastic, not less.
It's not that I want to trivialize anybody's attempts or some of the things we are doing in 2018 but let's GET REAL about a lot of things. If we have approx 2 billion people who get to the level of a daily shower, a decent roof over their heads with proper plumbing, a 4 oz piece of meat and more, what will that do to oil consumption?
If those same 2 billion people get to the same level of energy efficiency that Europe is at, which is BY FAR more efficient than us, we could be looking at oil consumption at 50%+ higher than it is now? Maybe higher? I don't know.
This notion that the straws in Calgary and Justin Trudeau's carbon tax, where magically we are all going to get more money back than we pay, will save the planet is just lies and BS. Why don't we tax the carbon tax, throw GST/PST onto it and than throw in an environmental "levy" on to it and we can all be filthy rich here??
I just do think we are all lying to ourselves in a lot of ways. That's all and the notion of the tiny things leading to these grand global changes will save us from ourselves, I think are false. My PERSONAL opinion.
