Default Predators def. Flames, 5-3

Two teams who will win their divisions is their current play keeps up.

I would have liked Smith to outperform their goalies. I won’t blame Smith, because there’s no one to blame - it was a tight game - but I wish Smith had gotten a few more clutch saves. I feel like Saros coming in and making such huge saves only to have Smith not answer them was the difference in the night.

I really want this team to learn a killer instinct. Attack when the other team is vulnerable.
We had three high high danger chances on him in the ten minutes he played.

I mean I know it's Pekka Rinne but I think Saros is a better goalie than Rinne right now. I feel like we challenged Saros 5 or 6 times and he bested it.

They had a grade A scoring chance the second he came into the game, and made at least 2 other really good saves.

They challenged him, he just answered the bell.

Flames improved forward depth now means they can put pucks in the net and stay in any game. But it looks like if they win it'll have to be in track meets.

It's no secret the Avs intend to move on from Varlamov when his contract is up, and I'd bet Treliving has him in his sights for the off-season. Maybe that plan could be moved up. Problem is now he's playing lights-out to start the season, so a deal now would mean giving up assets. Something along the lines of a Jankowski or Mangiapane + Smith. Mid-season deals for goalies are tough to find a match.

This is what your post should have said. I agree that Mike Smith looks like he could be the weak link this season, but unless Treliving is able to make a deal for a goalie that 1) does not cost too much to acquire, 2) is able to fit with the Flames cap structure and long-term plans, and 3) is an obvious improvement over Mike Smith, then NO, the Flames should not be making trigger-happy reactionary changes. I doubt very much that there is a realistically attainable goalie who is available right now, and who meets all these criteria.

Stop that! He should stop more than he does to be even av average goalie. The team is playing well, he isn't.

I look at quality of chances on goals scored.

No weak goals tonight.

Some very weak defensive plays, however.

But blaming TJ for the loss wouldn’t fit the CP narrative.

I think a better question is what scoring chance is Smith going to save?

We're getting close to seeing Bill Peter's yell at Smith to stop the puck. I'm excited for that.

Mike Smith is fast becoming a problem.

Great game from Sam Bennett; the kid is breaking out.

Pretty well can guarantee that will get more attention from the Flames than GG's stick toss...that was so orchestrated.

I'm still a Brodie skeptic. When he makes mistakes they always seem to end up in the Flames net. He's been responsible for at least four goals this season. I realize he's a good skater and is very good at times back with Gio but man when he has a breakdown it's nearly always costly.

The Avalanche have designs on being a playoff team, and Grubauer has had limited experience as a starter. I don't think they would consider moving Varlamov at this early point of the season. At least not unless it was an offer they couldn't refuse, and I sure don't want the Flames making one of those.

I’m 2 of the 3 hours me games this year I’ve heard the Dome sarcastically cheer Mike Smoth making a save. I haven’t heard that before in 12 years of being a season ticket holder.
