The irony. The players are concerned about the concussion and dangerous hits to the head. A repeat offending predatory player does it again. The league attempts to deter the action thru a severe penalty, rather than a ignorable slap on the wrist and the player's union come to the guy's defence in the form of an appeal.

Hopefully at about the 17 game mark.

I was thinking about the same thing. Players want to get this stuff out of the game but the PA wants to appeal the suspension. If more players want to sue the NHL in the future I wonder if it gets thrown out of the court due to the PA's actions.

Do they? Or did Wilson instruct them to? I honestly don’t know but those are two very different things.

I think they are perfectly justified with the number they came up with.

They've always prioritized salary over player safety. This shouldn't really surprising to anyone.

the union isn't appealing it.
they've filed an appeal on behalf of Wilson.
like scroopy said. it's a big difference.
the union has to support all it's members, not just the ones they want to.

Perfect scenario: Injured player also requests NHLPA representation at the last minute, forcing the people representing Wilson to also argue against themselves while representing the guy that got hit. Bettman recognizes the entertainment possibilities and broadcasts the whole thing as a PPV on Center Ice from his phone. This makes enough money that the NHL can afford to keep upping the suspension and fighting the decision until Wilson's contract expires, which Washington is forced to endure without any cap relief. Also, the Flames win the Cup somehow because of all this.

What about the other player involved in this? The PA should be standing up for him and not this Matt Cooke wanna be.

Although, if we're just talking money, Sundqvist is a kid trying to make it in the NHL and Wilson ruined his chance to make the team by taking him out in preseason. He'll probably get sent back to the AHL but who knows what would've happened if Sundqvist got to play the whole preseason.

The NHLPA was perfectly happy to cost borderline NHL's what was probably their only chance at a spot in the NHL during lockouts to keep the top top earners of the league happy.

It was pretty well known that the NHLPA supported Todd Bertuzzi while leaving Steve Moore twisting on the vine.
So, yeah. There's more to indicate that the union cares little for the injured than to indicate that it is equally supporting the people that injured them. After all, Wilson has a $5 million contract. Sundqvist is just an AHLer.
Just another example of why the NHLPA should also be a defendant in the concussion lawsuits.

Not that I am anything but disgusted by Tom Wilson's play, but what sort of advocacy does Oskar Sundqvist actually need from the NHLPA in this instance?

I would think that the NHLPA would want to protect all of their players from plays/players like this. They would be supporting Oskar Sundqvist indirectly if they came out in support of the NHL's decision on the suspension.
I get that they're there to represent all of their players and Wilson's request for appeal. I just don't think they're doing themselves or the rest of the players any favors by going down this road.

You’re really having difficulty understanding how representation works. How in your view have they not supported Sundqvist? Has he a filed a grievance that they have refused to represent him on or something like that? You’re setting an expectation that goes above and beyond what they are required to do while also suggesting they misrepresent Wilson by not allowing him to file an appeal.

You say that you get it, but if you really did you’d accept the fact that the decision to file an appeal isn’t up to the PA.

I’m sure the players would agree that giving the PA the authority to pick and choose which appeals they do or don’t file wouldn’t be in the players’ best interest, not to mention the fact that it would also be illegal.

If the league is as serious about player safety as you’re boasting, GMs probably wouldn’t be signing players with Wilson’s track record to $30M dollar contracts. Just my two cents

To use an analogy, if I was the victim of assault in the workplace, I’d want my union to protect me and my coworkers from further harm from the perpetrator by upholding their suspension to its full extent.
By reducing the suspension it sends the message that the behaviour is tolerated. Or at the very least isn’t viewed as a serious offence. You want it to be a deterrent to both the offending player and other players.
It’s moot anyways since no player would ever ask for advocacy of that kind. They’d be ostracized by their peers.
