I would imagine Valimaki's parents are en route to Vancouver.

He outplayed him in the last game I saw. Andersson’s skating is a problem area still IMO and he really struggled against the forecheck. Sure he looks good with the puck on his stick in the offensive zone but you worry every time the puck is dumped into his end and he has to go retrieve it. That’s not a good thing for a young defencemen. Valimaki is the much better skater, bigger, and stronger with the higher upside. And of course the left side was much weaker with only Kulak as competition whereas Andersson has to try and beat out both Stone and Prout.

For the best mix on the team Valimaki makes a ton of sense. Prout/Stone are both physical stay at home dmen. It’s nice to compliment them with a young skilled guy who can rush the puck and is the opposite side handedness of them.

Valimaki was only competing against Kulak and Prout for that spot.

Andersson was / is competing against Stone and Prout. Valimaki making it and andersson not are not truly directly related.

Obviously the team thinks that Valimaki is an upgrade over Kulak while they don't think andersson is a true upgrade over Stone or they don't want to run stone out of town or sit him in the pressbox just yet.

Valimaki-Stone gives the kid some stable vetran comfort. I can see that being important for the first bit.

I will say though the way Peters talked about Andersson though it makes think we'll see Valimaki-Andersson full time before the season is out.

Future 2nd pairing for the Flames.

This makes me wonder about how this plays out in two-years' time:

Hanifin · Brodie
Valimaki · Andersson
Giordano · Hamonic

Still have Kylington and Ollas-Mattsson as well in the wings...

Sooner or later it's going to come down to it like this. I think tree has done an excellent job of putting a succession plan in place that can last a decade.

Maybe a guy like Valiev steps into that 3rd pairing once Good time is up (whenever that may be).

Fingers crossed Kylington factors into this mix as well.

Hanifin, Valimaki and Andersson look like they have solidified a future in Calgary and Gio, along with being captain, is signed long-term so its safe to say they will be here in 2 years.

I think Hamonic adds an element to the team that we don't have much of on the back end so I like the idea of retaining him as well.

Brodie and Kylington are the wildcards for me.

If Kylington progresses perhaps you move Brodie when he has value and perhaps add a longterm solution in net (if Gillies and Rittich don't establish themselves soon). I love Parsons but goalies need time to develop so there is no need to rush him.

I wouldn't be against keeping them all and Kylington can be the 7th dman because you never know when father time will take its toll on Gio (I personally think he will still be highend for a few more years but defensive depth is important).

Those same 6 guys in your original post might very well be our top 6 before the end of the season or at latest next year given we will likely need to clear out Stone's salary to pay for a Tkachuk extension.

I'm not slotting Rasmus into the top 4 unless he can improve his skating considerably.

Andersson makes a good first pass out of the zone and seems to be in good position. He needs to work on his skating though in my opinion to take Stones spot permanently.

I'm happy Valimaki made the team. Even though I thought he was better then Andersson, I thought Andersson would have made it over him for logistical reasons. Nice to see the competition brought out the best in BOTH players. Nice to have that kind of depth and talent waiting in the wings.

I can't believe the starting 6 on opening night is going to have a 21 and a 20 year old. When have the Flames ever been able to say that?

And both guys have future top pairing potential.

Plus Anderson and/or Kylington next year...crazy. This flames team feels so young.

In 1999 the Flames had Morris (21) and Reg (19). The year before they had Morris (20) and Gauthier (21).

Considering Gio and Smith are on the team that's good.
