Totally forgot about Dube... Another target for this forum to beat up on when he doesn't score 50 goals in his first season.

Stajan has definitely upped his game in the last few weeks, but no. He's pretty much done, and we have kids in the minors that need to come up. Give him his silver stick and then move on.

If he doesn't get another contract from someone else, I'd be more than happy to have him back on a PTO.

I appreciate everything he has done for the franchise and I hope he and his family live in Calgary after his career is done but no, I wouldn't re-sign him.

I understand he’s a great guy but I’ve never really been a fan. Don’t hate him by any means
He’s had some good moments for sure. Time for him to move on for this fan.

I assume you wouldn't be happy if he actually earned a contract off of that PTO?

I think Nick Shore is his replacement.

Nope. Should never have been re-signed to begin with. I always thought Sutter re-signed him to make sure he still had "something" to show for the Phaneuf trade. When Feaster Burke re-signed him the second time, I really could not understand why.

I'm sure he's a great guy and all, but you shouldn't be paying a 4th liner $3+ million..

No. It was Burke who re-signed him the second time.

No, he was signed to a bad contract. I have been waiting for his contract to expire for years. Great that he's having his last hurrah and has been serviceable for a 4th liner but it would be a mistake to bring him back. Reserve that spot for a younger, faster, hungrier player with potential.

If he does, then awesome.

I am always rooting for players pushing to stick in the league. Stajan can likely have a place somewhere.

Matt Stajan is 34 years old and has two 30+ point seasons in 8+ years as a Flame.

Matt Cullen has 5 30+ point seasons since he turned 34.

I don't think Staj has it in him.

Not a chance. 4th line has been brutal all season. Definitely an area where the Flames. An improve. Thanks for the service Matt. Enjoy retirement.

Too many solid candidates for 4C coming into camp next season. Also, it's hardly as if they can't just "gift" it to some rookie kid and have to bring vets in on a PTO to challenge them. Shore and Lazar have hundreds of NHL games between them - that'll be challenge enough. Dube is a possession monster in his league also.

No. Shore is here to fill that spot. Plenty of bottom 6 players kicking around...time to acquire a top 6 player (or two!) to push down the lineup.

Poor thread. Literally the entire site of CP knows what the answer to this question is so there is no need to even ask it. Nobody here hates Stajan. However even though he's been a good solider overall and great in the community, most of us feel his time has come to move on from the team.

The only purpose this thread serves is to now bash him and pretty much give reasons why he sucks and shouldn't return. Poor timing, and IMO he deserves better then this.

I would re-sign Jagr first before even thinking about re-signing Stajan

I’d sign him into the back office, certainly. He seems in the mold of Conroy and Gelinas... hell make him the PP coach... not like he’d be worse at it.

I’m happy with Stajans tenure with the Flames, I’ve never hated on him, even in his twilight years, but we really do need to start opening up spots for youth to expand into. Last thing we want is to lose out on prospects in the future because they think cracking the roster here is harder than elsewhere.

I agree with Cali in that I believe Treliving acquired Shore with an eye to potentially replace Stajan with him. I don't think the Flames re-sign Stajan.

With that being said, boy has he come a long way. Looking back at they type of player he was - so soft and almost meek out there. It seemed like he even just rolled over and gave up when Horak out-competed him for his spot that year with the comments that he made (and that Feaster blasted him for).

Who would have thought he would change his game so much from being a top 6 soft but skilled center to a tenacious 4th liner who is almost always pushing and poking after the whistles, and who plays very strong defensively and sacrifices his body willingly every night to help this team win.

He has turned into a fantastic example, and I can see why he is not only loved in that room, but also pretty respected. Really interesting to see the change not only in his game, but also in his mindset. The Flames WILL miss him next season, but I just think it is probably best to move on. Maybe if he signs for league minimum and is the 13th skater...

I think the Flames need to upgrade their forwards. That 4th line has been good, but it needs to get quicker and more physically imposing, and hopefully provide some additional offence.

Wish him luck wherever he goes, but I do think his time is coming to an end here. Seems like a heck of a person though who just seemingly changed his mindset and decided to fight tooth and nail instead of rolling over and playing dead. He will always have my respect wherever he goes.
