All NHLe stats point to a much less productive version of Matthew Tkachuk. He's going to go way too high based on name. We shouldn't be giving up both Brodie and Bennett for him, and yet oddly enough due to the silliness surrounding him those two likely wouldn't get him.
He's going top 10 and possibly top 5 and will cost what it takes to get a pick in those ranges. The Flames doing what it takes to get Brady Tkachuk would be an unmitigated disaster.
You'd have all the insanity of forking over a Kings ransom for a top level pick and then picking a player who's almost assuredly not going to live up to his selection!

Bennett is 21. He has shown ability to play with good line mates, but has been mired in the Gully blender in the bottom 6.
Backlund wasnt impactful until he was 24 or 25.
I dont think the Flames should sell low.

GM: Brad Treliving - Although I hate lot of his moves, he surely has a plan with this roster and I don't think it would be wise to get rid of him in the middle of the process.
Head Coach: Marco Sturm - This looks crazy but this is my bet on easily available, future star coach. He had great NHL career as a player, as a coach, he built Team Germany from almost nothing and led them to tremendous succes while playing fast paced hockey generating chances and tons of shots on goal. I think he will be great NHL coach some day.
Lineup:
major trade: To CGY Kaprizov rights, Jonas Brodin. To MIN: Frolik, Brodie, 2018 4th round
Bennet - Monahan - Gaudreau
Tkachuk - Backlund - Kaprizov
Ferland - Jankowski - Versteeg
Brouwer - Lazar - Hathaway
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodin - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone
Smith
Rittich (has shown he can be reliable backup when Smith was healthy)
Top 9 looks to me like a potential scoring powerhouse. 4th line has Lazar for speed, forecheck, Haths for physical aspect and Brouwer for placeholder.

Carlson is fine, but 7 years (to age 35) and $9M is crazy talk.
I don't want Kane.

I like the idea of that trade, but our second pair would be bereft of players who are capable of contributing offensively.

So, the difference between a team which is in the bottom third of the NHL in scoring and a scoring powerhouse is Kaprizov.
Let's get this guy at all costs then.

How is that top 9 any different from what we have now?... I'm not familiar with Kaprizov, but unless he is the next Ovechkin... this top 9 is, for all intents and purposes, the top 9 we have now... and a scoring powerhouse it certainly is not.

GM - Ken Holland
Coach - Dave Tippet
Trades:
1. Brodie to Ottawa for Hoffman.
Signings:
1. Evander Kane - 4 years / $5.5
2. John Tavares - 7 years / $12.5
Buyouts: $1.5 hit
Troy Brouwer to be launched into the sun
Forwards: total = $52.9 hit
Gaudreau ($6.8) - Monahan ($6.4) – Hoffman ($5.2) = $18.4
Bennett ($2) – Tavares ($12.5) – Kane ($5.5) = $20
Tkachuk ($1) – Backlund ($5.4) – Frolik ($4.3) = $10.7
Dube ($1) – Jankowski ($1) – Ferland ($1.8) = $3.8
Lazar ($1)
Defense: total = $22 hit
Giordano ($6.8) – Hamilton ($5.8) = $12.6
Hamonic ($3.9) – Andersson ($1) = $4.9
Stone ($3.5) – Kulak ($1) = $4.5
Goaltending: $5.25 hit
Smith ($4.25)
Rittich ($1)
Total Salary: $81.65
Cap projected to be in the $80-$82 range.
Also as a note, I rounded everything up to the next closest 100,000, so in actuality the cap space there is a bit higher and could withstand another one or two league min. players.

Man thats optimistic. Kane for under $6 mil, And only 4 years ?
Tavares signing in Calgary is a stretch . Tavares signing in Calgary and playing 2nd line center is not happening. You honestly think they would keep Monahan and Gaudreau together if we signed Tavares?

You'd have two top lines that you could roll consistently. However you want to mix and match the forwards is up to the coach. The way I look at it is JG and Monahan have undeniable chemistry, so you keep them together with a trigger man like Hoffman. Tavares doesn't need anyone on his line to be able to generate offense, but putting him with two bulldogs who are fast and can go get the puck makes sense.
Tavares is definitely a stretch, but who knows. It's a fantasy lineup after all.
Kane for under $6 makes sense to me based on his career. Guy has been nothing but hyped, but in reality is a 20 goal, 25 assist guy. Backlund just signed for $5.3, and was a Selke candidate last year with close to 60 points.

I agree that there's almost no chance at Tavares. But imagining you could do it, and if Dube doesn't pan out, you'd need a Nick Shore or someone like him on the bottom. I suppose you could put Hathaway there. the problem is you have to re-sign Shore before you know about Dube.

Yea, but you can find a $1M fourth liner relatively easily, either within the organization or not.
Once you stop paying vets like Brouwer and Stajan so much money, it really opens you up to be able to add an impact player.
We have a wealth of defense prospects. Logically we improve by either moving a current top 4 d-man if we think our prospects can step in, or we move one of the blue chip d prospects in a trade for scoring help.
Problem with the second scenario, is that you don't get the benefit of a younger player on a cheaper contract coming in and helping your cap situation.

I like this idea other than you don't leave room to resign Tkachuk the next summer. If you trade Brodie for Hoffman I would leave Kane out or trade Brodie for picks and sign Kane

Title is YOUR 18-19 Flames and MY Flames have Tavares on the team. If BT can't get him to sign here it just means I'm a better gm lol.
