I've always figured for these anthology movies, that they should avoid doing things like origin stories of characters, unless they're kind of outside characters.
With Rogue One they were smart, Vader and Leia were fairly minor characters and it didn't really do anything to character develop them or change their story. Tarkin was cool, but again there was nothing new, and the story featured all new characters.
To me, maybe the idea of doing like a Solo story, or a Kenobi story or a Bobba Fett story is that it feels like we're shrinking down the GFFA instead of expanding it. We're linked to these characters, and clearly nothing else happens anywhere else.
Rebels worked great because it focused on a group that was far away from the events of the Galactic Civil war and non of the characters were related, and while they got pushed in, they were still on the outside.
you could do a story on anything and anytime, instead they're caging themselves,
the other problems is every hard core fan is going to look at a Solo story with a fine tooth comb and complain about every aspect of it, that's just the nature of it.

I can understand the lack of excitement, I could care less if this movie came out tomorrow or in a year,
but I will still go see it in theater, I just can't miss anything related to the Wars on the big screen. That may wane as we get saturated but I doubt it.
They're trying to feed off of the legacy of the originals to generate more cash.
Which is actually fine if you can live up to them and produce films with the same tone (grungy dystopian space western!), level of engaging storytelling, enthralling characters and character chemistry. They created some fine characters with substance and chemistry, but the storytelling particularly has fallen a fair bit below the bar set by the OT. Mainly due to lack of originality, and a lack of progression of said characters. And meanwhile they've killed the more beloved original characters off in ways that don't do justice to their greatness. I bet if you leave everything about TLJ intact but just make the change of Luke living and kicking First Order ass in the film, most fans come away much more forgiving of it.
If Disney continues in the same direction as they're headed, which is some visually appealing mordern sci-fi popcorn films that happen to have the SW name attached to them, then it's best to go off in a whole new direction, different time period, etc, and leave the ties to the superior originals behind. Maybe Solo can flesh out his character in ways that don't tarnish the way we see him in the OT, but it's more likely that it raises eyebrows among fans and doesn't really feel like Han Solo but a reimagined version of him that tries to tie in as a believable prequel but doesn't really sell anybody that it actually happened and preceded the OT events. My guess, at least.
I don't dislike any of the films, to be clear. But if you're putting the SW name on it and borrowing the characters from the OT, then make it SW through and through. Otherwise go explore another corner of the vast galaxy, which hopefully they are doing after IX.
Last Jedi has completely soured me on Star Wars, I'll wait for home releases from here on out
This one is make or break for me. Disney has kind of taken the soul out of the franchise. Lucas had a certain charm that I just can't put my finger on that's missing from the new movies. I don't think they're terrible, but I'm beginning to think they're not worth getting excited over.

This is going to sound cheesy, but Lucas for all of his faults in dialogue writing, viewed Star Wars as his baby and it was genuinely a labor of love.
Even with Disney bringing in directors who were fan boys, its not the same thing. Also with George at the helm, there was a certain consistency to the whole thing that was really lacking in the first two trilogy stories.
Right now Rogue one was an exception because it was a one story movie.

The series was two great movies, one good movie, one #### movie, two poor movies, and then these new sequels.
The soul was long dead, there was no soul in the prequel trilogy either. It's been a marketing tool since A New Hope.
I'm still waiting for a film that doesn't just look like SW, but has the recognizable spirit of it as well. RO was the closest thing to it, but still wasn't "it".
Huh, I'm honestly surprised someone would consider Rogue One to be closest to the spirit of Star Wars, as I think it's generally considered to be the largest deviation from the form. It's way more serious, the spiritual side has it's completely own take etc. (Only talking about movies now.)
IMO Force Awakens was very successful in recreating the spirit of ANH.
(But of course this is as much a matter of taste as anything can be.)
EDIT: Note that this isn't really a comment on which movie is better. (Although I did like Force Awakens more than Rogue One, but this has a lot to do with the first having a superior cast.)
I think that clears up a little bit of the rumour that Alden was so bad he needed acting lessons. Sounds like he just struggled with his Ford impersonation.
This helps explain why Disney were so quick to give Rian Johnson a trilogy after TLJ (before it hit theatres so they didn’t have any critical or Box Office results to go by). By all accounts things on set operated smoothly and efficiently for a big blockbuster, which would be a welcome sight after the reshoot issues on Rogue One and director issues with Solo. Any issues with the reception of the movie Can be ironed out by committee or with some extra people looking over his shoulder if they felt it would be needed but delivering a relatively stress and problem free production was the important thing.
I will be waiting to rent this one. I am interested in the characters and their history but am worried that, like Rogue One, this will be another high budget fan fiction with an over reliance on references and fan service instead of character development and a good story.

The thing i find weird is that this is out in May already then we don't have another Star Wars movie until Dec 2019? That is a long haul.
