Monahan could of had a hat trick last night. Instead he opted to pass into Ferland's skates and now Ferland is the goat for missing the net.

I've noticed (and the announcers too) that it's happened a bunch of times over the past couple games where Monahan tries a cross ice pass instead of shooting. Ferland (unfairly) isn't ready, it bounces off him and he ''misses''.

Monahan needs to shoot, shoot, shoot. Stop looking for Ferland. Shoot!!
That's a very interesting perspective. I can respect that.

Exactly this. And it goes both ways. They have the two most dangerous shots on the team, neither one should be looking for anyone when then have the puck in the slot.

At least that was the first home game since they played the Blues where they took authority in their own rink from what I managed to see. They've been serving up points for visiting teams for the most part while more competitive on the road. Last night looked a lot like one of their good road games and there was a lot of emotion following the captain's goal which is an improvement over how resigned they've looked lately.
Also effin rights Gio, that's how you shoot a puck, setting a good example for the rest of the defence tossing waffles into legs, chests or wide.
Enjoyed the angry mr bean group tackle celly.

My thoughts about the game was we made that way too close for comfort.

It’s been a while since we won a game by a fair margin. We can’t afford to allow these important games to have an extra point involved.

Happy we got the win though! And I’m stoked for Mangiapane, that guy didn’t miss a beat! He actually made the 4th line watchable.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has noticed this! This team loves to try and look for the perfect pass sometimes.

And He only had 7 minutes of ice time! Talk about making the most of your opportunity! Sometimes you see guys out there for 15+ minutes and the camera never finds them once. I bet you he had 7 minutes of camera time! Very impressed!

Didn't watch the game but was happy to see the flames heading into the new year with the W.

Hope they can build on this and start improving. 3 games since the Xmas break against teams they are chasing down for a playoff spot. In those games, they have given the opposition 5 points while only getting 3 points themselves.

Now they don't play till Thursday. I really hate the flames schedule this year.

I have two other big Flames fans at my office. I have been accused by them of always being too optimistic about the team. They said that I always tried to find the silver lining even when it wasn't really there.

I hate how negative I've become. I admit it - I've lost all hope in this team succeeding with this coaching staff. I am now very much one of those that sees the negatives. I didn't focus on the huge OT win last night because I couldn't get past the fact that we almost instantly gave up our 3-0 lead, we got scored on in the last two minutes to give a playoff spot rival a bonus point and we were a coin flip away from giving them two.

I wanna turn it around because I'm not enjoying the game like I used to but I find this version of the Flames to be the most infuriating one in 15 years.

FWIW, I don't blame Ferland for botching those Monahan passes, but I also think that if it were Hudler there, he would have drained them both. So I don't blame Monahan for attempting those passes, and ideally Ferland improves and starts draining them, rather than Monahan stops attempting the passes.

Ferland is still young though. I think he's going to get better and better every year. This is still his first full year in a top six role (playing with top six guys). Look at Marchand, he's only gotten better every year. Some top six guys have played in that role longer, but have also improved very little (Frolik, for instance) but Ferland is not a guy that I believe has peaked even as far as this season goes.

Probably not, but we won't be near the basement in the West.

Happy New Year all!

Thoughts from a 'Hawk fan.

1. That Smith guy in goal is pretty good! He kept a lot of good chances out when your guys were playing to hold the lead, instead of putting your foot on the throat of a team that was in the middle of a long road trip, playing in front of a career AHL goaltender.

2. If Monahan had ANY confidence in his game it should have been 3-0 after the 1st, instead of 1-0. He just passed up a lot of chances to Ferland, who seemed to be expecting rebound chances instead of passes. Monahan did get a goal, but he had a lot more looks than shots. This, in my experience, is where teammates have to pump him up, and say "just shoot, we have your back."

3. The Flame D covered a very mobile offense pretty darn well. And this includes Forwards covering a very active D, that likes to sneak down the weak side for one-timers. The Flame D only looked shaky when they gave Kane too much time wheeling toward the point off of the half-wall, but, a lot of teams can't cover that either.

4. A very entertaining game, with plenty of pace...give me that over system trap crap any day.

5. I loved Frolik when he was a 'Hawk...hope his recovery goes well...versatile guys that can plug in at any of the 12 Forward spots (even if just for fill-in purposes), PK and PP are gems. He never lacked for effort with us.

6. Am I disappointed that my guys are hovering at the bubble? Sure. But, for much of the year, we have trotted out a young squad. Last night, Glass, Debrincat and Kampf are rooks. Schmaltz, Hinastroza, Kempny, Oesterle, Hartman, and Hayden all have less than 2 full seasons under their belts. And Murphy, Franson, Wingels, and Bouma have only 3 months in Q's systems. So expecting a powerhouse, just because of Toews, Kane, Seabrook, Keith, and Saad is unrealistic. And Panik, well, I expect that he would be moving up the "available at trade deadline" list.

7. As far as complaints about Gulutzan, this is par for the course with HCs...Heck, we've got the 2nd all time winning Coach with 3 SCs for us on his watch, and there are a LOT of knuckleheads screaming in Chicago for a coaching change, because we ARE on the bubble, as if a new coach can make this mix of very young with Toews/Kane/Keith an instant juggernaut.

8. Thanks again to the fine folk here a CP, it is always a pleasure to discuss pucks with you guys, and again, Happy New Year.

Edit: If things are looking difficult for your team or my team, just remember, our teams haven't had the bevy of 1st overall picks that a certain team that trails our guys has had! That is always amusing!

I loved the emotion from Gio after the OT goal. You can tell the guy hates to lose, and I'm guessing it's been a frustrating season for him. I think he's been one of the bright spots on this team all year, and hopefully he can still lead them back up the standings. I'm just not confident it can happen under this coaching staff and the boring, offence-neutering system they employ.

At least the PP is starting to look better over the last couple of games. Baby steps.

Yup - 15 days is a long time. Especially with 5 or so off for the Christmas break.

6-1 Flames over Vancouver on Dec 17.
