0-6 against the Oilers, and hardly looking competitive in those games, is all that I need to see. We gifted them 8 points last season, and are well on our way to doing the same this season (10 points, actually, as we play 5 times this year).
Could you imagine, going 0-9 against the Oilers over two seasons, being the reason they were given the easy 1st Round matchup vs the Sharks in 2017, and the reason they were able to claw their way back to a wildcard spot in 2018?
GG's Flames are largely to blame for the hype machine that has exploded around the Oilers over the last 14 months.
If losing to a Flyers team that's on a 10-game losing streak is the nail in GG's coffin... then we better lose, while Treliving can still turn this season around.
|
Gulutzan is not a coach who will win anything of note at the NHL level, so the faster he's gone the faster the Flames can turn the ship around and become a playoff threat. If it takes several embarrassing losses for Treliving to finally admit GG was a mistake and can him, then I hope they get suitably embarrassed tonight

But I do have a sore point with people making claims about numbers and not having any clue - or at least not providing where they got them from.

Still, cheering for losses, as has been pointed out, is very Oilerish. I hope as fans we're better than that.

I have the perfect Avatar for you!
Anyways, this isnt Flames related but the way this team comes out and plays to start the game is really going to say a lot about them.

Starting your 4th line isn't that crazy. The other team quite often starts their shutdown line on the road, so you throw out the 4th line to "waste" a shift of their top D pair and a solid defensive line, then you come right back with Gaudreau's line and the 3M line back to back and at least one of them gets a soft matchup on their first shift.
HOWEVER, this only works when your 4th line isn't a total tire fire. Last year we could rely on the 4th line to at least chip the puck out of the zone and forecheck hard. Guys like Bouma, Stajan, and Hathaway had some of the lowest shots and goals against on the team (and even league-wide) - better even than the 3M line (with the caveats of easier competition and no offense to speak of).
I think a more fair criticism here is how Gulutzan seems to deploy his lines based on how he thinks they should play, rather than how they actually are. He's mentioned in interviews before than he believes in giving a struggling player a chance to work through a cold streak rather than cutting their ice time. At some point, though, you have to realize that your idea of what they should be capable of is wrong, and adapt. GG seems to believe that we're a team that's 4 solid lines and 3 pairs deep, and any underperformance there is just a slump they need to play through.
The real elite coaches have a solid plan in the ideal scenario, but they also recognize the flaws of their team and adapt to compensate for them. Chicago's 3rd cup is a perfect example of this. Quenneville realized he only had 3 good D in Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmarsson. So he doubleshifted the big 3 and Keith ended up playing 30+ minutes a night for the whole run. No coach wants to do that, but great teams and great coaches find a way to work around their flaws.

Start your 4th line if you're confident they will win the draw against the opposition starters (assuming they are a bottom 6 line) so you can then gain control and make a quick change to your top line. But make sure if you lose that draw that you have players on the ice that can hold the fort for 30 seconds and don't wind up pinned in their own end.
Since you control the match ups, that seems like a crappy chance to take especially if you're the Flames.
