As to whether or not he plays, who knows. Choice is his. Seems like a competitor so I expect to see him.

Oh I expect the Giordanos have a tonne of support, I'm more responding to calling another poster a wimp.

As a society we have created that opportunity. It's called being an NHL player.
It's eight months a year until you are ~36 then you retire a multi millionaire. If there was ever a career where you could be a full time father, there it is.
The Giordanos could have had the baby in the off season or when the NHL is done but did not. Maybe they have a plan where this works for them? They will come out of this just fine.

I took all of 1 week paternity leave for the birth of my daughter recently, but I should be able to take off a lot more than that to help out my poor wife who is still recovering at that stage.

Sacrifices. Don't be a wimp Cali.

This is such a crazy reality you live in. I sacrificed things at work to spend time with my newborn. Maybe that makes me a wimp? But maybe that makes you greedy

Cali, the paternity/maternity leave stuff is wayyyyy better in Canada than the US. Actually ANYWHERE other than the US. The US sucks in this area and is way behind everywhere else.

As somebody who tried to plan for a 2nd child to come during a certain time of year, it does not always work out the way you want to. And you're certainly not waiting another year to try again.
Also, as some can attest to, having children can be harder for some than others and could take much longer than expected to conceive.
Anyways, great for the team/fans if Gio is playing. At the same time, great if he stays home with his wife and kids for this game. The timing works well, as the next game isn't until Monday.
I'm updating the first post now with the lineup updates.

Yes, 100% true.
A lot of it comes from the fear of losing a job or looking "uncommitted" to the work. The same reason that paid vacation days aren't used either.
I'm just putting these thoughts out there in response to people suggesting that Gio should obviously be playing tonight. I wouldn't give it a second thought if he wasn't playing the day after the birth of a child. I think we need to move the expectation a little so that fathers don't feel pressured to return to work immediately.

Is there any word on whether Gio is going to play?
I wouldnt blame him either way. If he plays thats great and if he doesnt, thats fine too.

I agree Cali, Family will always come first for me. Nothing would have made me go into work the first days of my child's life. I want to be there as you never get those days back.

I agree in principle, but
a) I bet the Flames would absolutely give him this game off if he desired and
b) I bet Giordano wants to play as long as everything is fine with the birth

I see it both ways.
We want to spend time with our family, but life is also about sacrifices. Gio has certainly made some in his time, we all have to. The hardest part is determining when to make those sacrifices.
I'm sure that if you asked Treliving he'd tell you that its Gio's call. If he wants to take some time with his new kid thats likely fine, if he wants to play thats fine too.
Life isnt linear. Its dynamic. Sure, family is most important but that doesnt preclude other decisions from also being important.

He's out of the house for the evening and they don't play again until Monday. In Calgary. He will have plenty of time.
No love lost if he wants to be home, and I'm sure wouldn't be in the lineup if the game was in another city. But they are here, he will play.

That is kind of what I was getting at. I would expect him to be out unless otherwise stated. If he is playing it is because the birth was on an off day. Although, that is just me amusing it happened yesterday and was just reported this morning.

Don't forget the hockey wives are pretty tight you guys, and the flames organization would probably supply plenty of help in order to have their captain and star D-Man in the line-up. I'm sure they have as much help as they want from this first class organization.

This. A thousand times this.
Having a baby isn't the same for everyone. Both in terms of how easy it is to conceive, the pregnancy itself, what happens after the birth, how easy the kid is, how the mom reacts, how the dad reacts, physical problems, are they feeding well, do they cry all the time, do they sleep, are they colicy?
There are so many variables that for any of us to try and pretend to understand what the right thing for Gio to do in this situation is arrogant and judgmental.
It is also none of our business.
