That contract is bad news for the flames. Backlund will want and is worth something similar and since Bennett and the savior Janko aren't doing anything, the Flames are probably going to have to pony up for Backlund.

Paying $6 million to good players isn't a problem if you aren't paying $4 million to 4th liners.

Hahahaha what? This makes no sense whatsoever. Turris scored 55 last year, which put him 29th in the NHL among centers. There are 31 teams. That's borderline first line production, and for $6 million. He's 28. Even if you were right and he scored 50 points a year, that is excellent second line production. You will not be able to get a good second line center for less than $6 million ever again without RFA years being involved. It's all Ryan O'Reilly from now on.
Completely insane. Just about any team in the league should want Turris on this deal. Certainly the contenders, and especially Nashville, where center's a point of weakness.

3 Way Trade: Duchene to Ottawa. Turris to Nashville. Picks + prospects to Colorado

You can say that all you want, but at the end of the deal Colorado took on the most risk. They got a good quantity of futures, but with those you have no guarantee that even 1 of them will hit. Sounds like Girard is a good bet, but the risk is still there. 1st round picks in the range where that pick will likely be could easily end up being a Poirier/Klimchuk. The risk is real.
Ottawa wins this deal in my eyes. They got the best player.

Ottawa took a huge risk on a two year rental. If he doesn't resign it's a massive overpayment. But if he does resign for a reasonable number they probably come out okay but Nashville wins this one. Spare parts for a top end 2nd line centre that you don't have to play out of position because you have a 1st line centre.

Good haul by the Avs, considering Sakic was up against a wall when Duchene asked for the trade. Are those people who complained about Sakic not trading Duchene last summer going to back up and apologize to him? Exhibit A of why you wait for the RIGHT deal to come by. You don't make a trade simply to appease your fanbase.
Suddenly Sakic looks like a genius after pretty much everyone in the hockey world crapped all over him for the last couple months.

What happened to Sakic? I watched his whole career and never saw him take a skate in the face, but just saw an interview and he looks rough. Was the snowblower incident worse than just his hand????

One decent move does not a genius make. Even blind squirrels find the occasional nut.

I like the deal for Ottawa, Duchene is two years younger and a first line centre, at worst a top tier 2nd line centre. I believe the east is very winnable for the next two years of Duchene's contract before he begins a late 20s decline. The pick they sent over is also lottery protected in case they fall flat. Certainly its good for Nashville as well as they just traded futures.

PETER: Not so fast, Lois. Kyle Turris is a top tier 2nd line center, but Matt Duchene could be anything! He could even be a top tier 2nd line center! You know how much we've wanted one of those!
LOIS: Then let's just-
PETER: We'll take Duchene!

I like it for Nashville the most, Colorado did pretty good and Ottawa...feel like they got raked over the coals here. That's a lot to give away for Duchene.

I was more shocked at how old Sakic looked. GM of a bottom feeder is a rough job. Yzerman is older and looks 10 years younger.

But the problem is you have to pay $6 million per year for 6 years, which means by the back end of the contract when Backlund is 34/35, he becomes your 4th liner making $6 million.
The money isn't the problem, it's the term. Backlund is the same age as Turris, hard to see him taking less.
The Senators are taking a bit of heat here as people see Turris for Duchene as a lateral move, but the Senators are really paying a premium for the slightly younger player. I'm sure the Senators will be fine with extended Duchene at the same money and term that Turris got from Nashville because he is two years younger.

Duchene already makes $6M. He will be extended at more than that I would imagine.

Sorry, your logic here is a bit off. There is exactly 1 and a half years age difference and Duchene's contract is up not this year but next. So if he were to sign the exact same contract extension as Turris, it would bring him until he is 34 years old...the exact same age as Turris' when his contract finishes.
The trade makes sense from Ottawa's perspective in that they believe they got the better player, and probably have a better chance to re-sign him, and if not at least they have him for an extra year.

It's not really a mystery. Duchene is a known quantity. He has a higher career ppg than Turris. Also, while no one has confirmed anything, I think Turris wasn't interested in re-signing with Ottawa, considering that Nashville signed him immediately.
Sens gave up a lot but it's probably better than going into next season with no top line centre.

No one who's looking at current value should really be looking at anything past a player's most recent three seasons, unless there's some extenuating circumstance (like injury or playing behind Crosby and Malkin in the depth chart). In the last three seasons plus the beginning of this one, Duchene has score .67 points per game. Turris has scored .69 points per game.

This is true, and it's very difficult to get a first line center on the free agent market or at the deadline. So maybe their hands were tied. However, this does not change the fact that the return was poor.

I think all three teams got better. Funny thinking that with a blockbuster trade.
Ottawa paid a very steep price for Duchene though. That is quite the gamble. I am not sure how they can re-sign him either being a budget team, and having overpaid for Ryan. That's a tough contract to slot-in now. As much as we make fun of the team for having the 'Giordano max', at least it seems to work for Calgary. Having Ryan's contract up there makes me think it is a tough sell in getting players to sign for less. If Duchene breaks out in Ottawa, he is going to expect a hefty contract. If he doesn't break out, Ottawa loses this deal horribly. I do think he breaks out.
Nashville got a lot better. This really does have them slot a lot better, and provides them with good center depth - what they have needed the most since that team entered the NHL. I didn't think they were legitimate contenders (even though they made the finals last year, I thought it was kind of 'lucky' for them). I do think that they are perhaps the team to beat this year now.
Colorado made off like bandits. That's a good haul. Sure, not everyone is going to pan out, but they got two pretty good prospects (one really good, one above average), and a nice haul of picks, plus a goalie that COULD help them now (he has been terrible this year, but maybe he isn't just a one-hit wonder, and a change of scenery will do him well). That's really good for them, especially given both Duchene's drop in production the last couple of seasons, and his public demand for a trade. Sakic made a really good deal... who would have thought that?
