It's a darn shame that Janks is down and Brouwer is with the team. IMO it's got to do with a hang up this team has with moving one of Bennett or Janks to the wing. IMO the talent needs the be pushed up the lines not down. Janks is one of few big bodies we have, either put him on Bennett's wing or put Bennett on his wing or do something more intelligent than stuffing worn out, low skill, slow vets in places they can't keep up. It's ######ing development and startling the horses.

Right, because Brouwer sucking immediately makes your incessant and laughable ranting about Stone all the more legitimate.
I enjoyed your posts better when your stat site was down for a week and you were unable to put forth opinions during that time.

Let's just say there was a trade centering around Bennett for Mikko Rantanen?
Likely wouldn't happen of course, but Rantanen is a left-shooting RW (which GG doesn't approve of) and is young, big, and skilled. Hypothetically speaking, would anyone go for that?
The Avs might be looking for a center after they deal Duchene.....

I love Tre but an $18 Million mistake is tough to justify in any business. Couple that with the fact that the mistake is standing in the way of a prospect that the organizations been developing for years and it starts to snowball. Not many people come out unscathed after throwing away $18M

When I saw this thread the first thing I did was go and calculate the buyout. 1.5M in cap for four years. That's awful. It still might be worth it.

Ugh. There is nothing more repulsive on a hockey forum than "I told you so's". Especially when it is negativity about our own goddamn players. Then you double down with this crap about our 5th defenseman. Its nauseating.
We get it, Brouwer has been and is bad. But he easily could have been the top 9 forward that the Flames thought they signed. It just hasn't worked out.
You should probably forward your resume to Burke and King for immediate employment as the knows everything guru. Many high fives and back slaps to go around.

I love a good atoadaso, even when I'm on the goofy end of it.
Like when I said I loved the brouwer signing and now hate it.

This whole thread is like an "I told you so". I don't think any individuals are particularly being singled out. But I mean, a lot of posters took a lot of flack last summer for these and similar opinions. You don't get to berate them for having a different opinion and then get upset when they talk about the actual results supporting their claim. Seems like an opportunity to learn, more than anything.

Advanced stats work. Science trumps eye test and gut feeling. You can't make a flying airplane with intuition and hunch. It takes math, calculations and science. Everything we use, including any technology behind this forum and devices we use to post here, is a work of science, formulas and laws. Hockey is going to be no exception.

^Hard to argue with the larger point you are making, but that would put us over the cap if Jagr's bonus kicks in, which it likely would. We probably don't sign Jagr if Okposo is here. Still would be a better decision overall, although I think Okposo is overrated.

We didn't have the extra $1.75M to spend last season! If I remember correctly neither of Gaudreau or Monahan were signed by the deadline. In addition, Smid was not a sure thing to go on LTIR either. Remember the reason why Wideman had to be our #4D last year to start, because of the cap crunch. That is also the reason the Flames went after Elliott and his $2.5M cap hit. In the end it is not all as simple as you make it out to be. Eventually the numbers probably would've worked out, though you would've had a higher bonus overage carryover for this season as well.

Maximum cap relief is 950k, so Brouwer would still count $3.55 MM against the cap.

Burying him in the minors isn't the solution.
The only solution is to put him in a position to succeed as much as possible and hope we can con someone else into trading for him.

there is no point trading him until the offseason unless the flames have a plan for the freed up cap space.

The point is getting out of the organization and freeing up a spot for Jankowski to play. If you bury Brouwer in the minors you will never be able to trade him.
I would assume, if Treliving can't find anyone willing to trade for him, that's the route he will eventually be forced to take. But the optimal solution is trading Brouwer for literally anything and getting Jankowski in that spot.
If Brouwer gets sent down, he's going to get bought out next summer, guaranteed.

Brouwer has a full NTC this season.
After that, he must provide a list of 15 teams that he cannot be traded to.
If he gets traded, I'd bet it won't be until after this season.
As much as I want to see Jankowski on the Flames this season, burying Brouwer in the minors would be poor asset management.
