Monahans time on the top line needs to come to its end. Bennett has the speed and tenacity to make space for Johnny that neither he nor ferland do.

1st goal was all on Brouwer just getting lost in his own zone.

Monahan and Gaudreau are much better than they showed. They are leaders of the Flames they should be taking it to the next level. Maybe Jagr will can be a good mentor for them.

I agree I think this really is a problem. I have no idea why this team refuses to hit but they're either being told not to due to discipline / coaching (which is idiotic) or they're afraid or they're just too small / timid.
Whatever the reason, they need to figure out that good teams play the body. They play the body on the forecheck and they play the body in their defensive end. Calgary needs to figure this piece out, it creates turnovers and it also keeps puck possession.
It's why they get dominated by the likes of Anaheim, for example. I think with McDavid it could be just not being able to catch him though.

I almost threw up when Edmonton won McDavid, they really didn't deserve it.
As far as this game goes? Same thing every year, too busy keeping players up and giving pre-season games to players that we all know aren't going to make it anyways.
Top two lines are set, want to see these bottom two lines;
Jankowski - Bennett - Jagr
Glass - Stajan - Versteeg

I know people need to vent but this is some insane vitriol. Aren't you supposed to like your team?
This game was bad, and I hate losing to the grease but people seem really down and angry for game one.

Blah Blah Mcdavid blah blah
fact is even the half of the game he wasn't on the ice the Flames got schooled and a big reason why is our coaching staff is downright terrible.
GG 2.0 once again showing he has no clue on how to utilize his players properly or make any in game adjustments. Even down a goal in the 3rd this teams looks like they're sitting on a 2 goal lead.
This team will never realize their potential with this bozo behind the bench and it's gonna be another wasted year. Sadly we don't even have our 1st rounder in a deep draft.
And sure I'll get flamed for this with the "it's only 1 game" stuff but in reality it's now an 87 game sample size with GG 2.0 plus his time in Dallas and the truth is he's simply not good.

McDavid has to love playing against the Flames. We are what appears to be the only team in the league that doesn't alter our system/gameplan when facing a generational talent.
"We just gotta stick to our game"
No, dummy. You just gotta shut down Connor McDavid. Stop believing that your system is stronger than a player that only comes along once every 10 or 20 years. No system is.
It is not an indictment on your system, if you alter it when facing a superstar. It is a necessary action to take.
I have to believe that McDavid has more points and breakaways against the Flames than any other team in the league.

Par for the course with this team and organization. Can somebody name the last big game they won? Vancouver game 6? The complete opposite of clutch.
They just made an average at best D look absolutely spectacular by generating next to nothing. I think I counted 1 quality grade A chance (Monahan in the 2nd).
Literally 18 guys just lost a game to 1 player. Ridiculous. Bravo to Smith though, the only player that looked great. Honourable mention to Glass.
Get used to losing to the Oilers a whole bunch.

Looks great in pre-season playing with actual hockey players. Get dominated when he plays with a couple ECHLers.

Is Brouwer on waivers yet?. He can't be allowed to play for this team instead of Jankowski. Troy is not the same player he once was, has to be so happy he signed that retirement contract with the Flames. I really liked Smith tonight hopefully he can continue to play strong. 81 games to go till playoffs!.

The biggest problem was a lack of intensity and focus. A lack of tape to tape passes, no retrevals on dump ins, an inability to drive into the offensive zone, an inability to cycle the game in the offensive zone, etc.
The oilers defense are not good. Three of their forwards lines are below average. I get McDavid can beat the flames. But the flames should be able to at least hold their own against the 3 non-mcdavid lines.
the team just wasn't ready to start the season today. They played a very rusty game.

Laugh at their defense? They totally shut us down tonight! Their defense was rock solid

No, they really don't. Talbot has been very good, I'll give you that. Their d is a Chinese fire drill most of the time and is even worse without Sekera. The Flames' sheer ineptitude made the oilers look like world beaters tonight.

I almost throw something at my TV when I saw that, lucky I removed all throwable objects around me after the second period.
