This is of very much significance. We do not prosecute violent offenders as harshly as we should, violent crimes seem to not be given prison lengths that are indicative to the offense these days. This is the time to take a stand on this issue.

At least 2 years? From the article:

The man was a Somali national going through the refugee claimant process, said Degrand

In 2015, after a complaint was made to Edmonton police that the man was displaying signs of extremism, members of the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) launched an investigatio, Degrand said,

The suspect was interviewed by members of INSET, but there was "insufficient evidence" to make an arrest and the suspect was deemed "not a threat," Degrand said.

Okay let's stop the Trudeau bashing for one second.

He took office November 2015. This suspect was in contact with the police in 2015. So unless Trudeau let this guy in as soon as he took office and his first contact with police happened in December doesn't it make it a better bet that this guy was let in the country under Harper's watch? I don't have all the facts but does anyone know for sure this was a Trudeau refugee?

Drain tax dollars making a farce of the courtroom (like that nutty woman from the Canadian Tire attack), then prison and then he’ll stay in Canada afterwards because we don’t deport people when we should.

Your use of the word bigot is tremendously ironic.

I don’t know about you, but I’m kind of doubting the hate-train forming in here is really concerned with something so trivial as “the facts.”

Is the "Somali Refugee" thing confirmed by police? Can't see that anywhere legit yet.

If so that's kind a big deal, even just optically. Sure we've been taking refugees forever, but if this person would have directly been prevented by a "Trump travel ban" type policy (regardless of when he came in, as it isn't about him specifically) via a reduction in refugees, and ban that includes Somalia, then in a roundabout way kind of proves potential efficacy and you might see some pushback in Canada towards our immigration policies. I don't want to make this another US politics thread, but locally, you might see more of a push in this regard.

And doesn't matter if this guy was in before Trudeau, because the argument will be made that he would be/is letting more potential risky refugees (accurate statement or not, it is a sentiment). Not blaming Trudeau, but more along the lines of the impact on our policies and politics nationally.

Didn't you link the original article?

It is the RCMP K Division Superintendent (no idea what that means TBH) that made the statement.

Again:

The suspect was known to both RCMP and police, RCMP K Division Superintendent Marlin Degrand told a news conference at Edmonton RCMP headquarters on Sunday afternoon.

I call them like I see them, just because I’ve pointed out your very concerning consumption and and spread of white nationalist propaganda doesn’t mean it’s something I reserve for everyone. Ignorance often leads to hate, but not every poster is guilty of spreading white nationalist propaganda just because their views are a little Trumpian for my personal taste.

Much like members of Edmonton’s Muslim community have already publically done with this terrorist, it’s important that we recognise hate and condemn it. If you feel unfairly prosecuted by me simply pointing out your passion for white nationalist YouTube channels, then maybe some introspection is required.
