Friday’s clip likely caused some nail-biting in Marda Loop and McKenzie Towne, Silver Springs and Saddle Ridge, but you’ll be less nervous if you listen to the entire interview.
“It’s a little different — every morning, you wake up, you look out your window and you see the mountains. Looking out in New Jersey, you don’t see the mountains,” Gaudreau said on the same radio appearance. “It was a cool transition. I go to Starbucks every morning and before I leave the Starbucks, I’m ending up taking three, four, five pictures and have little kids running up to me. It’s really cool. They’re really passionate about their hockey over there and it makes it a lot of fun playing over there, too.”
Immediately after his comment that it would be “sweet” to star in the City of Brotherly Love, Gaudreau again praised Calgary’s puck-crazed supporters.
“It’s been awesome. They’re so passionate about their hockey over there, and it makes it fun to come into the rink every day and practise,” Gaudreau said. “You’re in the middle of practice on a Tuesday and there is 50, 60, 70 people in the stands … It’s crazy, just the way they love their hockey.
“I think two seasons ago, we were third-to-last or fourth-to-last and still sold out every night, cheering us on. That’s the type of fans they are. They’re great to us and I’m really fortunate.”

You don't hear about this because except for a few stars (Stamkos) nobody bothers asking every player from Ontario if they want to play for the Leafs, because NHL players from Ontario playing somewhere else are a dime a dozen.
Johnny gets asked this because he's an American star playing in a western Canadian market.

Ok, whatever you want think... Any interview that Johnny has given to a non-partisan media source almost right back to his college days is essentially, " I'm an east coast guy, I love living there, and want to be with my family" if you read between the very wide lines.
Panicked? About what? We get him for the best years of his career and likely will have to move him so we won't have another Iginla situation where we keep his past his prime and get no return on the asset. Panicked? Nope. I actually think it might be a good thing.

Yes and if they don't, them where Johnny would like to play is probably going to be very low on my list of concerns.

If by "any" you mean east coast interviews with softball questions about how "cool" it would be to play at home, then sure.
But your last post literally said those vague off the cuff comments "sealed the deal" as to him leaving.
It's a massive leap on your part and a few others who are reading into something that just isn't there.

Rewind to last summer and we have a player who had only played 2 seasons and was a full training camp holdout with rumored asking contracts A LOT higher than he ended up getting. In the previously mentioned Spittin Chicklits podcast he was quoted as saying that the Flames dangled the 1 game, burn a year on your ELC deal with him but in hindsight he was "kind of screwed" since he never had any arb or offer sheet rights to get even a bigger contract.
|
I look at Bennett being in the same situation. If he had another year on his entry level contract, his new contract would be a lot clearer.

Honestly, the Flames may be better off if Gaudreau moves on after his current contract.
He'll be looking to get paid ages 29-36 next contract at a salary likely well above his current one.
He'll still be a good player, but his bang for the buck will be gone. Look at what Parise did in Jersey and for what dollars compared to Minnesota. Giroux in Philly. Perry in Anaheim.
In some ways it might be better to have a guy solely in his prime rather than to see the decline and have a portion of the fans turn on the guy ala Iginla.
I'd say enjoy the next 5 years and don't worry about what comes after.

hell, sometimes you don't even have to wait until the UFA contract to watch their decline and transformation into a goat. Hall, Ebs and Nuge all took the fast track to that stage, and now nobody cares whether they play for their home city or not.

Too true. 5 years is an eternity in hockey. It's not worth sweating over something that far down the line.

Much better job articulating this point. I was essentially trying to say the same thing.
That said, you're absolutely right. BT may have signed JG to the perfect contract where he's able to move him if JG isn't such the stud any longer. If he is, it's unlikely he will be for the entirety of the next contract.
I have my doubts that he's ever a Flyer though. If the Flames don't succeed in winning a cup during his tenure and wants change of scenery, it's likely that Philly will need to be a Cup contender at that point for JG to end up there.

Johnny says it would be sweet to be a Flyer
It's sad to see how easy it is for the media to spin people up into a tizzy (not pointing fingers at people here, mainly commenting on the reaction on Twitter).
