Anyone that suggests going after Vanek should be instantly banned. The only idea that might be worse would be to woo Semin back from the K
That's... a really harsh reaction. I honestly didn't expect that.
Look at the facts. He was a good possession player with Detroit last year on a godawful team and actually managed to produce despite playing with horrible linemates. He doesn't rely on the powerplay for his offense, his shooting percentage last year was in line with his typical numbers (12.8%), and is still relatively young compared to the rest of the FA class (only 34). He scored 48 points in 68 games last year playing under 15 minutes a night, and he's a big presence at 6'2". He strikes me as a natural fit.

I think Vanek* is one of the best forwards available as the moment. Although still old, he's younger than many of the other alternatives.
However, I highly doubt he'd be willing to sign a 1 year contract.
And since next year has a stronger UFA selection, it would be smarter to stick to the 1 year contracts.

The ban comment was in jest, obviously (I thought).
But Vanek has been one of the laziest, least engaged players in the league for years. Years. There is a reason why he keeps bouncing from team to team. And the fact that he put up decent points and possession numbers on a bad team impresses me not at all. In fact I would expect it from him. No pressure, no contact, no problem. But he has proven over and over that, when things actually matter, he disappears.
Semin actually is a comparable.

I still remember that amazing defensive zone coverage and hustle to get back by Vanek at 1:42 from this game.
Seriously though, he just doesn't care enough. He would drive fans here insane.
Nielsen lost his man...not Vanek....
I don't have an opinion on the player but it seems like he played good last season.....but before last season - reviews weren't positive to say the least but he always seems to get a team who wants him.
Good. Dodged a bullet there IMO, but Treliving is still owning all the other GMs with being in on all these deals. Still on track for Marleau and Jagr!
Why are signings being confirmed prior to noon free agency? I thought term and dollars can't be discussed during the discussion period leading up.
The NHL is turning a blind eye to the no term and $ discussions rule. Would be hard to enforce anyways.
Remember when players signed within the first 5 minutes of free agency before the interview period was instituted, league pretending like nothing dubious was going on....
I would imagine it started with the league taking the approach of only acting if a complaint was launched. There is probably an informal tradition among GMs of asking permission before speaking to a player, and everyone automatically obliging to prevent a complaint against themselves in the future. Then it would just become the norm.
Wtf? Totally contradicts his earlier tweet saying that he was assured by mgmt that Sharp would not be returning.
These journalists, I tell you. Gotta stop with these definitive statements when they don't actually know for sure.
It's also a little sad that Chicago keeps reuniting their previous cup teams, at the sacrifice of up and coming players like Panarin. Reeks of desperation to cling to the last crack of light in their window.
Chicago brought back Brandon Saad, an elite 25 year old winger.
I'm not getting the "reuniting" comment.
They consider Saad a much better all around player, and considering that Panarin had only 6 more ES points last year than Saad, their offensive difference is much less than expected.
It's Not like they are overpaying bringing these guys back.
Sharp is making $800,000 for 1 year. That would have been an entirely risk free deal for Calgary. Pretty sweet deal for a player who won a gold medal 3 years ago and only has a risk based on injuries, where he can be LTIR anyway. He can even be buried.
