A cheaper Strome is a good get for the Oilers.

His game was really coming around after his rookie season, I'm not sure why he fell off the map so quickly.

Still young, and with lots of upside, and if he plays with you know who, he could produce big time.

Unfortunately I don't think the Oilers will miss Eberle much, and they are undoubtedly thrilled with the cap savings.

As others have pointed out, the Lucuc contract may be the one they regret unless they go and sign Russell to $4 or $5 million over multiple years. I like Russell a lot but he's the kind of player you need to develop yourself and then trade when the time is right.

But this trade is a + for the Oilers I guess. Luckily their team on the ice is no better because of it.

The Islanders sure pissed away their cap savings from Grabovski deal.

So far it looks like the Oilers with 12 forwards 5 defensemen and 2 bluelines have a $58 million dollar cap hit.

With Sekeras out long term the Oilers have 4 defensemen who can play.

In terms of resignings, Drasiatl probably at 7.5 Kassian will probably bump to 2.5. A Russell or Russell light at 4 to 4.5

So lets say they add $14.5 so that would take them to about 72 to 73. They would probably still need to add a blueliner. So this deal gets them slightly below the cap.

The year after that, Its the apocalypse for the Oilers with Strome, McDavid, Letestu, Slepyshev, Maroon, Nurse, Benning, Broissoit all needing new deals. So they could potentially be adding about 16 million to their payroll by the time things are said and done, and I doubt the cap is going to go up that much.

First of all, the Oilers are now in the budget business, second of all, I was wrong, They're going to have to find a way to dump some expensive pieces. for nothing. Suddenly Lucic, Poulliot and RNH are pretty damaging contracts.
I know what you mean ... but it doesn't quite feel right if as Flames fans we are simply going to hope the Oilers beat themselves with poor contract decisions.

I like this deal for the Oilers. Eberle is a floater and part of the old rotten core. RNH probably next to go. I miss Kevin Lowe who was scared to make moves like this.

They could solve this problem by removing RNH and Pouliot in a deal that involves a solid top 4 D coming back (a la Mattias Ekholm or Chris Tanev or Marco Scandella or even Jacob Slavin maybe) and then not signing Russell.

Probably means Spencer Foo let them know he's going to sign up there too.

So to quickly recap Rebuild 2.0, the Oilers turned:

2008 #22 Eberle
2009 #10 MPS
2010 #1 Hall
2011 #1 RNH
2012 #1 Yakupov

into...

RNH, Larsson and Strome

remember when the Big 3 (version 2.0) was going to be unstoppable? And then adding Nuge meant "not a question of if, but how many"?

Worst rebuild in history.

Number of Oilers' playoff goals scored by the above group of players: 0.

Paajarvi scored a goal in the playoffs this year.

But that is still awful, especially when you consider that two of the other players have a combined 26 playoff games between them.

Unfortunately their inability to draft/rebuild will be forgotten. Already they are being lauded for their strong team, even though it is only because of a lucky McDavid pick.

I think some people underestimate Eberle's contribution to the Oilers this season

sure the playoffs sucked but he was their 3rd leading scorer, not sure how this improves them. They gain cap space but only so they can bring back the guys they already had.

I think Adam Larsson is the best player on this list. Uggh I hate defending the Oilers.

Totally concur! After so much ineptitude with all the high picks they had, for them to get "rewarded" in the McJesus is still so dispiriting...

For the Blues, not the Oilers. None of those players have scored a playoff goal in an Edmonton uniform.
