If Sutter indeed wants to continue coaching, gotta think Dallas would be a great landing spot. Has an elite offense, needs better defensive play. Sign Sutter, Sign Bishop, progression of a lot of young D or upgrade and profit.
The Dustin Brown contract came in the summer of 2013.
Brown had one year left on his deal at the time and had put up 6 straight seasons averaging 25 goals and 55 points. He was their captain and had led them to a Cup win in 2012, and a conference finals in 2013. He also put up 20 points in 20 games when they won their first Cup in that 2012 run.
Since then he's put up seasons of 27, 27, 28, 36 points. I don't like Lombardi, but that's not on him. The player seems to have mailed it in since getting the big money, or just can't handle the pressure.
The Gaborik contract? That one was terrible because he was signing a 32 year old to a 7 year contract. Yikes.
The Brown contract was on the GM. Everyone saw how Brown played the game. He was going to break down sooner rather than later. Even if he's fine and just decided to mail it in now that he's got money, that is still on the GM. Especially when re-signing a guy from your own team, you have to know who to give money to and who not to.
Its why Radulov is an interesting FA this year. Just based on the #s, he's a no-brainer to give a big contract, but do you trust him to keep playing hard?

As @GMillerTSN noted, also hearing how some Kings staff and players went to Lombardi's place last night to say goodbye... strong bonds

Hahaha....not what I said at all.
What I can say is that they aren't under-qualified and no one would know that team better than they would. Particularly what it is that's preventing them from being better than they have been. In no way does that make them the best possible candidates much like just because they played there would disqualify them.
I remember seeing a video about the Kings where all Sutter talked about was how nice of a place it was to live.. I don't know if he wants to give up that life style for Winterpeg..
Maybe when Anaheim gets absolutely man handled by Ferkland's Flames in round 1 there will be a job opening for him..

For Sutter's best fit as a coach, probably Winnipeg or Dallas. He's a "get them to the next level" coach (LA). Also a "make the POs with what I have" coach" (Calgary 04). I don't think he's up for a rebuild (Vancouver).
I don't think he's up for a trip out east. He likes warm weather, so I doubt Winnipeg, though it's more like home I guess. He can wear his cowboy clothes in Dallas without being unusual.
I'm a little afraid the Canucks will just hire both of these guys.
Lombardi built winning teams from nothing in both San Jose and LA...
I am not at all worried about this. Vancouver is a long, LONG ways away from becoming a competitive team, and I don't see how Sutter especially has any interest in overseeing that sort of a rebuild.
I am actually expecting him to retire.

One thing about Daryl is that for the most part he's been in some larger centers. Chicago, Bay Area, Los Angeles. Calgary is the one exception, but he also had a much larger role in Calgary than any of his other gigs. So it's not like he's a farm guy who's scared of larger cities...he's pretty much spent his NHL life in these sorts of places.
Given that, he may not be as keen to go to a place like Winnipeg where hockey would be the only thing in town. In a place like Dallas, he'd be back in a larger center where he wouldn't need to be a media focal point.
Given how much money he'll be getting paid by the Kings, it's hard to imagine Winnipeg wanting to pony up and bring him in. Chipman isn't a cheap skate, but he he's pretty much reaching into his own pocket to pay a premium level coach.
I suspect Sutter will resurface at least one more time. He's not quite 60 yet, so he's still got something to give.

While hes oft-branded as a 'simple farmer' hes far from some backwater yokel, hockey runs in his blood.
I could see him being back at some point, but look at his brothers running lower-tier hockey teams, that might intrigue him at some point, but really, some teams that are on the cusp of contention could use a coach like him to take them over the top.
And at the same time it wouldnt surprise me one bit if he decides to lay low for a while.

Strictly related to Chipman and going into his own pocket...
Let's not forget that the co owner of the Jets is the richest person in Canada.
Sutter in Winnipeg is a perfect match. That club has a big roster with many pieces but just can't take the next step. Hopefully they jump all over this
