I'm glad he got fined. No place for diving in hockey and it drives me nuts.

It must be frustrating for him to be slashed repeatedly and no penalty calls, but it's no excuse.

^^ It does give the Flames some flexibility in case of a head-to-head match-up vs the Oilers. Can't get Backlund's line out there? Throw out Bennett and (hopefully if they play together) Lazar. Both fast and would do a decent job I think containing McDiver.

As for Gaudreau - I get that this is a symptom of the reffing, but knock it off. I absolutely detest diving. Anyone on the Flames. It is embarrassing.

Football is so often ridiculed for exactly that. It is a symptom of the reffing, absolutely. How does FIFA go about reversing this in football? I have no idea. I don't want the NHL to end up like FIFA. I still loved the players that would fight through the tackles, like Luis Figo - he would break a lot of tackles, and when he went down (at least during international competitions) it was USUALLY because it was a hard tackle. Ronaldo is an exceptional player, but it is frustrating how he acts up when he doesn't get the call, and he often goes down too easily. I get why they do it now in Football - why risk injury by trying to break the tackles? If they don't go down, eventually the other team will just tackle harder. That is how FIFA chose to ref the games, and that is the consequence.

We are starting to see the same happening to hockey, and I absolutely cringe every time I see it. I love football, but for the love of all things good, please don't turn into football!

I don't have a strong opinion on the play against the islanders (acknowledge it was probably a dive, but about as minor as could be). I do wonder if Johnny suffers from some reverse Shaq/Lebron perception on this (you could beat the hell out of them, but it doesn't look like a foul because they are so strong). A 'gentle' hook might not affect nearly every other player in the league, but when you weigh 150 pounds, any force on your body is going to seem more substantial. I don't expect the refs to compute that in real time, but I think it would be most prevalent in the diving discussion.

Serious question: if you hook Brent Burns with a force of 10N (physicists, please feel free to correct to an appropriate level of force) and he skates on like a fly hit his windshield, but apply that same hook to Johnny and it pulls him down, should it be a penalty both times?

There has been times this season he has dived or embellished for sure. I find this was an odd incident to choose for a fine because really he went down while holding the other player's stick and it was probably a holding the stick penalty if anything.

100% of star NBA players chirp at referees for calls. 100% of star NFL players do it. Even the non-star players do.

Too many fans try to hold onto this ideal that players should put their heads down and just do their job. That's not realistic when there are emotions involved and you want your team to win.

There are proper ways to chirp at a ref. Drawing penalties helps your team win. Just don't be a whiny baby about it or take the embellishment to absurdly embarrassing levels.

Giordano had some pretty sick dives over the past few seasons too, but no fines. I hate diving, but referees need to remain impartial. There can't be a dive/embellishment call and a legit penalty on the same play.

Absolutely there can be an embellishment and a legitimate penalty on the same play.
