His contract actually runs through the 17/18 season...

Depends on where we are in the standings come trade deadline. If we are in a playoff spot there is little to no chance he waives unless it is to one of the top contenders.

Yeah true, forgot he has a NMC. The ball's in his court really. But if they can't move him I don't see them making any other trades. I think it will be pretty quiet league-wide this year because of the expansion draft.

Oh, FFS. No need to act irritated if you get called on derailing a thread.

Not sure how the OP takes it upon himself to conclude Backlund and Bennett "will be in the mix from the Calgary point of view" and then gets angry when people begin to question / debate that.
Seems really odd to start a discussion, throw something subjective like that out there as factual and then try to bully everyone into what should and shouldn't be discussed in said thread.

I'm ok with the flames having a quiet trade deadline for once.
I'll say Bouma for a 3rd.

I've gotten a good chuckle of out of thread policing he's trying to do. I get it, it can be frustrating to start a thread and see it wander off, but my lord, get a grip on things. Post of his posts having been whining about what's being discussed.

No one is taking Wideman and the extra 2 or 3 penalties a night for their team

Wideman for Wideman under the table "jersey switch" at the upcoming Ottawa game?
I don't hate Wideman, but he doesn't score any more. He's not the designated PP quarter back any more. So where does his value come from now? Those were the things the Flames signed him for initially. He hasn't been bad generally in a #4 role, he's still an NHL d-man, but the times when he is bad, it's glaring. And he hasn't exactly supplemented/aided Brodie this season. Although that's not all on him. Brodie is good enough that he should be able to carry the pairing on nights when needed, but he's not doing much of that this season.

Well, whether he wants to be or not, no team that would trade for him would be acquiring him for any other reason than to be a plan B (or maybe C), so he'd be the back up anyway. Don't think he really has a choice in the matter other than to ride the pine in which ever market he's in and make the most of his starts to try and maximise his value for his next contract.

His best gamble there would be to hope he gets shipped back to St. Louis.

To answer the OP question, I think the first player traded from the current roster will be Bouma.
Suggesting Backlund and/or Bennett be traded - especially for picks - is exactly how you turn yourself into a perpetually rebuilding team.
The goal isn't to get younger, the goal is to get better. When your team is veteran-laden, and yet not good enough to compete, then you look to get younger. But only because that is the path to getting better.
The Flames don't need to get younger, they need a couple more pieces - and some patience. The Flames are trying to get better.
The only possible way that trading Backlund could make the Flames better would be if a) Jankowski were definitely ready to be a #2 (which isn't the case yet) and b) we got a top line RW for him at a good cap hit.
Trading him for picks is lunacy.

My guess is it will have a slight dampening effect - but you'll still have teams looking to add for a playoff run. Expansion concerns can be addressed after the playoffs and before the expansion draft for most teams. It'll definitely be interesting.

I think Wotherspoon will be traded first.
If he doesn't count, I'll go with Elliott.
I don't see the Flames being very active in this year's trade deadline.

Will probably get flack for this but oh well
I think Ferland will be traded. His value is probably high around the league with the Vancouver series etched in people's heads and some of his big hits being played on highlights. What they don't see is the 10-15 game stretches where he doesn't get any points and looks pretty uninterested in even playing physical.
So I will predict Ferland gets traded first.
