I hope not to live here for the rest of my life. Don't know where I would go though.

i didn't mean erratic and lack of planning in a vacation sense. i mean erratic basic rules. I need that sort of structure.
Similar to the what was posted about Panama, Asia, especially SE Asia can be chaotic. On vacation it's fine but working and living there could be different.

Can you commute from A to B everyday in a timely fashion.
Can you eat street food every day or have to buy and cook eventually. Street food is not healthy over the long term.
People are nice but offices can be bureaucratic and bog down
Getting the right papers, how to get paid, how to pay for things daily etc..
Corruption, I've had to bribe customs officers and taxi drivers to get things
And as a girl, it's always a bit less safe when I leave Canada.

Beautiful weather, some of the nicest and most hospitable people on the planet, laid back cultures (especially compared to Japan or Korea), and amazing food wherever you go. I live in southern China so flights to places like Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam are dirt cheap.

Of all them Vietnam is by far my favourite and I want to go back. I just went to DaNang which is not "real" Vietnam maybe (I don't know) but it was awesome. Didn't feel overly touristy and like you said food, people, weather, scenery were all amazing. Really though if you are talking about a place to retire I can't imagine a better place than Southeast Asia.

Personally I miss Canada some times, but on the whole life is really good here.

We emigrated here from England in 2006. I am pretty sure that I will stay here for the rest of my life because I already chose Calgary to live in when I could have chosen anywhere else in the world. As much as my husband would like to be somewhere warmer in the winter I am too obsessed with my Calgary Flames to leave them during the season.

Washington D.C. was very much like that too. I was blown away how close massive, Southern plantation style, Georgian multi-million dollar homes were to arguably the worst slum I've ever seen, with what looked like a bunch of gang bangers hanging out in front of a car on blocks in front of some rundown building. It was literally no more than a couple miles, so crazy.

You can tell the middle class in the U.S. - or at least the East coast anyway - is so much smaller than it is in Canada. It's like you're either upper middle class or above, or you're straight broke. No in between. Crazy stuff down there, makes me happy I'm Canadian.

My wife and I will most likely move back to her native Japan. Ideally, we will spend spring/summer or summer/autumn here, and the rest of the time in Japan.

Cool idea for a thread.

I've moved around a bit but I've lived in the Greater Vancouver area for the past 10 years. I love it.

I will always consider Calgary to be my 'home town' and I enjoy heading back to visit family and friends ... but I could never see myself moving back there to live.

yeah DaNang is the most touristy place in Vietnam. So if you didn't feel that was touristy then you'll find the rest of Vietnam different. Just going a few kms north to the Ancient capital Hue is a real contrast (Hue is really poor).

You should come to Taiwan. I think you'd love it.

I have no intention of ever living in Calgary again. It's so boring.

Maybe Vancouver, or Montreal. But you'd have to pay me a LOT to get me back to Canada.

This kind of attitude always amused me when I was traveling. Would you be willing to give up your Canadian passport for someone who wants to live in Canada? Or is Canada a place of convenience between adventures?

Citizenship is very different from residence. There are a number of advantages to Canadian citizenship which have nothing to do with where I live.

And, for the record I've been a permanent non-resident for over 5 years now, so it's not like I'm taking breaks in Canada between 'adventures.'

Hell, under Harper I wouldn't be allowed to vote I've been gone so long.

I'd put myself in that group that's bases the decision on family. Basically if the kids settle in Calgary then we aren't moving. Though I could easily see moving to within easy driving range to enjoy a more rural lifestyle.

You should know better than to call Calgary boring on a Calgary message board. That is just trolling.

I'm not sure I get your response though? Why would someone ever give up a passport if they didn't have to? Even though I am now an Australian citizen and have a passport here there is no way I would ever stop renewing my Canadian one.

I hope to live in the same city, neighbourhood and house for the rest of my life, though I also do hope to occasionally spend a year living abroad, in northern europe or japan.

Not directed at you specifically, but whenever I see something like this it reminds me of a client that I used to have years ago. He married a Vietnamese woman and he'd winter in Vietnam and then come back to Canada during the summer to work until he could retire.

He had the same attitude and he told me about having an abscessed tooth and he got it fixed by a 'Dentist' in a dirt floor hut for the equivalent of like $8.

"No waiting."

Sure, it got infected and he had to have a Canadian doctor prescribe meds and a Canadian dentist fix it when he got back here, but its 'so much better.'

No thanks. Sounds like a nice place to visit but I like living here.

I moved to Calgary for work, only planned on staying for two years, but it turned into ten before I left. I miss K-country, but not much else.
