That penalty shot was the turning point of the game. Gaudreau gets hooked and if that's called, Flames go on the PP down a goal. Instead McDavid scores and we're down by 2 again.

Tough night all around. From the slobberfest by Sportsnet to Elliott looking like Hiller to Gulutzan's weird defensive pairings. Let's hope Friday is much different.

At least the PK was great tonight.

Wideman's on the first pairing, clueless. Hamilton is on the 2nd pairing invisible.

You should add Ferland to the list. What's he doing just skating around touching nobody. Freddie Hamilton can do that.
Grossman turned over the puck on the 2nd goal as well. Really at 2-0 this game was on it's way. Can't start like that and put the team behind the 8-ball.

The bad news is, we lost to the Oilers.

The good news is, it's only game 1.

not sure why every season has to start like this

What a weird team. The last time the Flames won a season opener Brent Sutter was behind the bench. How does one explain that?

Breaking up Gio and Brodie is worse than breaking up Monahan and Gaudreau IMO.

7 goals against looks pretty bad for a team that's supposed to be a lot better defensively and have better goaltending.

Maybe it's just me but training camp and preseason are sorta the time you figure stuff out.

Flames badly outshoot the Oil, doesn't that mean we won the possession stats, isn't that the goal

Thought on what went wrong:

1. Elliott was as bad as anything Hiller gave us last year
2. Grossman
3. The officials fully bought in to the McDavid passing the torch hype and played their part.

4. Flames look sloppy in their own end
5. Our top line looked like it couldn't hold a candle to the Oilers top line.

The good news. Despite all that:

1. We only needed one of the first 3 things listed to have not been the case and we win the game.
2. We still badly outshot the Oil.
3. Team IMO looks like they need some time to adjust to the coaching, figure out pairing, and get the top line into game shape after missing the ore season, and I still didn't think besides the score it was that bad an effort for game 1.

I thought Bennett looked pretty good actually. Lots of smart plays to put the puck into dangerous spots, with a bit more chemistry between he and Tkachuk/Brouwer those get jammed in.

He also made 2 fantastic plays along the boards on Wideman's goal.

Team needs a cpl weeks to sort it out. Shame they didn't use the preseason to do it..

I usually don't post in these loss threads but... That was absolutely nauseating to sit through that massive Oilers, McDavid, Katz and Rogers jerk off session

It is a noodle scratcher to be sure.

The Flames were exposed last year against fast teams - particularly Wideman. Engelland seems to be savvy enough to get by - but Wideman is just completely over-matched against the wrong match-ups.

And then you add Grossman into the equation.

Again - not gonna work.

I thought the Flames forwards as a group were OK. The top line didn't get much done but we did have some pressure and possession.

The d were not good. It will be interesting to see the TOI but GG's approach seemed to yield equal 5 on 5 ice time which makes no sense to me. But then our so called better D men like Gio and Hamilton were bad. The Oilers speed made our D look bad.

But you can't win with a game like that from your goalie. Everything else is secondary. We need to see how he plays behind a not so great team before any extension happens.

Going to be very interesting to see if Gulutzan is a square peg/round hole guy or if he recognizes that he effed up and will change course on D.

Not gonna lie the Oilers got some calls in their favor, but the refs did miss Lucic getting high sticked which would've been 5min.

The Flames PP is so scary, the Oilers on the other hand not so good.
