Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an irrational or dysfunctional decision-making outcome. Group members try to minimize conflict and reach a consensus decision without critical evaluation of alternative viewpoints by actively suppressing dissenting viewpoints, and by isolating themselves from outside influences.

Groupthink requires individuals to avoid raising controversial issues or alternative solutions, and there is loss of individual creativity, uniqueness and independent thinking. The dysfunctional group dynamics of the "ingroup" produces an "illusion of invulnerability" (an inflated certainty that the right decision has been made). Thus the "ingroup" significantly overrates its own abilities in decision-making and significantly underrates the abilities of its opponents (the "outgroup"). Furthermore, groupthink can produce dehumanizing actions against the "outgroup".

Antecedent factors such as group cohesiveness, faulty group structure, and situational context (e.g., community panic) play into the likelihood of whether or not groupthink will impact the decision-making process.

Groupthink is a construct of social psychology but has an extensive reach and influences literature in the fields of communication studies, political science, management, and organizational theory, as well as important aspects of deviant religious cult behaviour.

Do they have ribs during their executive meetings?

And did he have to go through the Katz designed initiation?

So does Gretzky get back behind the bench when McLellan fails to make the playoffs for the next 4 years?

IDK - ambassador for the game, lighting the Olympic flame. It is largely all symbolic but to have him associated with the organization in an official capacity is nice for the fans.

In a way it kind of makes sense. If I'm sitting at a business lunch or negotiation and I'm dealing with Kevin Lowe, I'm going to think the whole thing is a joke compared to if it was Wayne Gretzky shaking my hand and on the other side of the table.

[MacTavish]Visually...[/MacTavish] it looks better.

But it does nothing of substance for the organization.

99.9% certain there will be some symbolic passing of the torch from Gretzky to McDavid during this ceremony tonight.

Oh man...Hey buddy, no pressure. McDavid is going to end up in a mental institution if they keep this up.

Right you are. Neither do new uniforms. But it's still something for fans to get excited about. That's all.

Not that I need any more reason to hate the Oilers, but this helps.

Yeah, sorry don't want to come off as fighting with you.

This just acts to mask the problems with this organization.

At this point if I was an Oiler fan I would be excited by one thing, on ice success.

They got rid of Semenko last summer so they needed someone to replace his drunken scouting of pro players.

I bet Chiapet is really happy to come to Edmonton, told he had full control so Katz just hires all the former team and puts them above him in the org chart like vultures waiting on a branch.
