Which team says no to Yakupov for Wideman deal? CGY retains half, gets flexibility to sign Russell. EDM gets no-risk RD whom Chiarelli knows

'Ha ha Stupid Oilers' aside, that would actually be an astute hockey move.
We berate Wideman but he still has his uses and can run a powerplay better than anyone Edmonton has.
Either way though, Edmonton loses that trade because they'd expect more out of Wideman than he can deliver, but I think he'd provide more to Edmonton than Yakupov will.

If Calgary retains half of Wideman's contract, they don't gain any flexibility to sign Russell. They'd go from having $5.25 million in cap hit for Wideman to having $5.125 million in cap hit for Wideman and Yakupov.

Oilers don't need salary retention in that kind of trade anyways. Thy can take the 2.75 extra cap hit and still have over 6m in cap space.
Kind of want them to do that trad now. it leaves some flexibility for the season, hopefully not to sign Russell.

But then you can waive Yakupov and put him in the minors and save another $900k.

They get the flexibility from not having an extra NHL D. It seems like Russell will sign for pennies on the dollar, so whatever we have left to give him will have to do.

It sounds like they couldn't get a third for him as recent as the draft.

On HF their fans are scoffing at Kylington and a 2nd. I wouldn't trade either piece for him
Wideman full cap and a 3rd is as far as I would go

If they couldn't move him for a 3rd at the draft, why would we need to throw one in with Wideman?

^Because Wideman's value is < 0.
He's overpaid and is of no use to his team that has three better powerplay options.
Wideman, 2017 2nd, Pollock is fair for what Yak can bring, and probably gives the Oilers enough incentive to trade with a rival.

Bob Stauffer @Bob_Stauffer
Get the sense after Reinhart didn't grab it and the indifferent play of one of the vets that the Oilers still exploring options to upgrade D
Stauffer is preparing the fan base for Wideman.

This must be doing wonders for Edmonton's reputation as a Player's paradise.

I know we all dream about getting rid of Wideman, but would Wideman waive his no trade to go play in that wasteland up north?
I guess he would get Mcdavid to help pad some stats on the PP, but I'm not sure that's enough if I'm him. He runs the risk of ending his career up there if it turns into another tire fire.
