Hmm, I'm now questioning your entire analysis of what you did see.

They were definitely terrible before the floods as well. I remember hoping the floods would have forced them to have better ice because of new equipment but that didn't change a thing.

It's been bad for about 6-7 years.

Some of my thoughts:

Bennett and Brouwer looked great together. It was nice to see Brouwer take and win some faceoffs. Tkachuk looked fine with them, but didn't overly impress.

Elliott looked super calm and composed in net today. Definitely felt a reassuring presence from him. MacDonald was understandably the opposite - he needs some playing time in the ECHL. He seemed like a ball of nerves out there.

I thought Shinkaruk had a good game. He looked very confident and agile out there.

Brodie had a lot of missed passes and a couple of giveaways, but I'm not concerned.

Kylington looked really flashy and impressive at times (such as on the power play at the end), but slightly out of place at other times. I think pairing him with Engelland helped him.

I also thought Tuulola looked decent. Could see him making an impact on a couple of years.

Stajan wasn't very good, but looks like Gully relied on him pretty heavily in all situations.

Chiasson was okay. I'm skeptical that he'll be able to keep up on the top line.

Sucks to lose both of the games to Edmonton. I know it's just the preseason, but Edmonton fans are insufferable.

Remember that time the oilers won all they're preseason games last year? We all know what happened after.

I'm not worried.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg

Final possession numbers for the #Flames tonight: 63.0% in Calgary. 30.9% in Edmonton.

Just my 0.02. I'm high on Jankowski, but no one else was good.

I don't know if they played the preseason games at the Corral, or if they just played every game on the road, but the first game of the regular season was the first event held at the Saddledome. From what I remember, it was a tight schedule to even have it ready for October 15.

My Favorite part of the entire game is when the Oilers switched goalies Yakupov came out to warm up the goalie. Now anyone who has ever played hockey knows you don't try to score when you're warming up the goalie you just want the goalie to get a feel of the puck and make some saves.

What does Yakupov do? Tries to go top shelf blocker with every shot. You can't fix stupid.

I hate the Oilers, probably, more than anyone in the world. But you're nitpicking.

I would guess that they had pre-season dress rehearsals in the 'dome though and the 'official' opening was that game. If the building was ready, I'm sure they would have played in the Saddledome.

Was the game in Edmonton tonight in Northlands, or the new rink?

And a stub from the game...

Not really, I found it funny that a guy warming up the goalie looked like he was practising his shot instead of doing what he was supposed to do....let the goalie get a feel of the puck. He can't even do the simplest job (shooting pucks at a goalies body and pads) and not a shock it was Yakupov.

Analytics types are already predicting the Flames will go 0-164 this season.

Agreed. As a now beer league goalie, I ride my team for the high and wide shots during warmup.

Useless.

Jankowski seems very calculating to me. Even his celebrations seem subdued like he is memorizing what worked, or self criticizing what he could have done better.

Two wins in a row for the Oilers. It must be a franchise record since Gretzky left.
