Zero. After university I moved to Lloydminster with pretty much no savings and my student loans. Thanks to the previous bust in Lloyd apartments were a dime a dozen and super cheap to rent. Paid off my loan in a year and starting saving after that.

So only at the point of having 120k saved up did you decide it was time to move out?

Must've truly loved your parents' company.

This thread should really be: "How long did your parents put up with you freeloading crap?".

No money, but moved out the day after my 18th birthday to live in Lake Louise. Lived in staff accommodation so didn't need any money. That was the most fun ever. No responsibilities, snowboard every day, party every night.

Nobody knows what's actually going to happen with real estate in the near future. I'd wait a few months before buying though. It be a bit of a kick in the nuts to have negative equity after saving so long.

No kidding. As soon as it came to light that I'd been kicked out of university and I had a decent job, it was strongly suggested that I leave the nest. Oldest of five kids, so freeing up a bedroom was a good thing. No one seemed too concerned if I had much of a nest egg.

Yeah it was a cultural thing for me too.

I hated it at the time. Tough to date, it sucked coming home when you have had 10 beers, but now I am starting to see the benefits.

You can save a LOT of money staying at home and it today's world it makes a big help. My wife and I at the age of 33 are now moving into a million dollar home because we saved up a lot of money at an early age.

Just to be clear, I am not trying to brag or be a dick. I am just illustrating the benefits of staying home. It can pay off in the end if you play your cards right.

It's gotta suck for the parents too though. What's the benefit for them?

Plus, kids are the worst cockblockers. If your old man was still around, his balls must have been bluer than Pappa Smurf.

$120k is nice and all and congrats on the million dollar house. But you maybe also missed out on some amazing experiences being your parents dependent instead of being independent at an earlier age. I am there to support my kids when they need it but I want them out there experiencing life on their own. And I sure as hell don't want them regularly staggering home drunk while I'm footing the bill.

Not sure he was a "kid" at this point.

Find it somewhat pointless to save $120K just to end up buying a $1mm house. Gawd I freak out over my tiny mortgage.

Living alone and being single, while utterly depressing in many ways, is something everyone should definitely experience. I was living with my parents throughout my early twenties so this is the first time I'm single and don't have to worry about:

A) telling the girl you live at home (maybe it's just me but I DREADED this at 23/24)

B) Having somewhere to take them with total privacy

It feels like those two issues were huge. Really regret not living alone when I was younger.

Still a kid, just an adult kid. Which is probably worse. You can hide things easier from a child, but when you live with your adult kid at home, you can't just koala style in the kitchen and not expect your kid to walk in and start making toast.

He said it was a cultural thing, so I am guessing the expectation is that one day, the elderly parents will move in with him and return the freeloading favour. A bigger house with an in-law suite is probably a good investment.

A month's pay, which was $1400 working two P-T jobs. I was 19 and my parents gave me a 30% down payment on my first 1-bedroom condo next to the MRU. Bought it pre-sale at 99k the day I turned 18 and traded it for a 2-bdrm in the mid-2000s, rode the boom up to a nice townhouse in a fancy pretentious neighbourhood, got married & divorced, sold the townhouse, gave the ex-wife 10% down for her condo across the street and bought myself a house on the other end of town, now finding the house way too big but no regrets, mortgage + utilities is still cheaper than a typical O&G guy's car payment.

Jesus, no kidding.

Put 100 down on a 400k place and laugh yourself silly in 10 years time.

Why do people imply that living by yourself is depressing / lonely? YOu don't have someone else to clutter your place up, the look and feel is totally yours, and whenever you want (ahem) company over, just make it happen.

Hate this stigma that being by yourself is wrong or something. Sheesh.

Not unless you are dating a girl that also lives at home!
