That the swimmers stopped at a gas station on the way back to the Olympic village, They broke the bathroom door and the owner and a armed security guard demanded that they pay for the repairs.
So the story was fabricated to sound like they were robbed at gun point.
I really wish I could find the USA today article that said this was a grand anti US conspiracy by the corrupt Brazilians. I think they took it down though. It was posted yesterday I think.
In other more hilarious news, a syncro diving team had a falling out when one of them stayed up all night, the night before the competition, to have a "marathon sex session" with a fellow brazilian Canoeist.
According to the New York Post, Giovanna Pedroso, 17, said she was booted from her room in the Olympic Village so that her partner, 20-year-old Ingrid Oliveira, could have a late-night romp with another athlete.

I for one am shocked that someone in their 30s who crudely dyes their hair platinum blonde and spikes it up with a tonne of gel like it's still 1997 and he's still 16, turned out to be an idiot.

Ryan Lochte is a documented idiot. I'm not sure about these other 3 swimmers, but I'm leaning towards them also being idiots.
Not necessarily. Two of the swimmers that he ditched in Brazil are 20yr olds and likely idolize Lochte to a degree- would go along with anything. Just speculating, but it is hard to believe, given his age and status, that he wasn't the leader of the pack and largely behind the story. Anyway, he has the money to book a quick flight and get the heck out of there.

Not that I'm defending Lochte, but is it possible the security guards had badges, and guns, and demanded money to pay for the broken bathroom door? I could see between Lochte's stupidity, drunkenness, and a language barrier that the situation could feel like a robbery. Like, guys with guns and badges are not letting you leave until you fork over all your cash. "For the door". Which granted should not have been vandalized in the first place, that's asinine behaviour if true. But someone pulling a gun on you to force you to pay up is pretty aggressive as well.
